Hello, Students! My name is Kayla, and I am excited to be your tutor! I began my teaching career eleven years ago as a substitute teacher, teaching students from preschool to 8th grade. Following that position, I was a first-grade teaching assistant, and lastly, I taught prek-3. A student Philip recently tutored only three or four times scored 800 out of 800 on SAT Reading Comprehension and SAT writing. For the the last three years I have been teaching at a Sunday school in Maryland. Working with kids on language, reading, writing and history has given me such a passion. I used many techniques depending on the students age and needs. For instance some of my younger students create an Alphabet time line to refer back to when forgetting a letter while reading or spelling. For handwriting, dotted lines in the shape of a letter have proven to help guide children in connecting the dots and creating the letters. I like to keep things fun and enjoyable to promote growth. Ms. C - Elementary/Literacy teacher
My greatest joy is seeing the flicker of understanding touch a child's eyes. When I hear a child make a connection to what I'm teaching, I know I'm doing something right. I entered the education field with a deep desire to make a difference. During the time I taught fourth and fifth grade I gained the most satisfaction when my students wanted to come to class. Whenever there came a break for holidays my students would moan. Sometimes I felt as not many of them had anyone who really listened t... Read more
