I'm Sam H.! I graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with degrees in both math and music. There's nothing I love more than helping people learn! While I've tutored everything from calculus to history to writing to SAT prep to physics, I worked tirelessly on a music theory tutoring program at Yale, which has since blossomed.

I particularly love tutoring SAT prep and college application essays—for a somewhat unusual reason: I like getting students who feel overwhelmed, or who feel anxious with impending deadlines for such an important chapter of their life. Why? Because the most rewarding thing is helping a student transform themselves. Not just transform their knowledge or their skills, but also transform themselves into more confident and free individuals. There is so much psychology that goes into succeeding in what is the biggest life transition most people will experience in their youth. I am honored to have been a strong, holistic guiding force through that phase for many students thus far!

I have nearly seven years of experience tutoring math subjects, both as community service in schools and as an independent professional tutor. Beyond the SAT angle of math, I also have an extensive background specifically with tutoring Algebra I, Algebra II, Precalculus, and Calculus (both AP tracks, in particular.) My degree from Yale in math centered on high-level math concepts, including advanced complex analysis and abstract algebra, and I served as a peer tutor and grader for several classes in college. My tutoring skills therefore also extend to higher levels of math for the more advanced student.

The music department peer tutoring program at Yale was one of my primary focuses while at college. Over my Junior and Senior years, I logged upwards of 1200 hours tutoring my fellow students, working nearly every single day. Topics and needs ranged from music theory to ear training to higher-level analysis using Sonata Theory, Schenkerian Analysis, advanced modes of counterpoint, model composition, orchestration,

Composition (Music)

I'm a conductor, pianist, composer, and music theorist with a music degree from Yale University. I've won composition competitions since the age of 12 and had my works performed around the country. I love helping students hone their own unique voice by working to develop a multifarious arsenal of compositional techniques, and by working on methods to unify those techniques in a coherent way.

I have a math degree from Yale (as well as music!) and over 6 years of SAT tutoring experience. It's important to balance mathematical content understanding while still seeing the big picture. The questions on the SAT don't say "solve for x" anywhere near as often as you might expect; really, it's all about being flexible and able to apply your content understanding in various ways! My approach is all about finding the right mix between focus on content and exploring its applicability.

I'm a conductor, pianist, composer, and music theorist with a music degree from Yale University. My entire musical expertise and purpose centers around the role of the ear in understanding and performing music. I've helped hundreds of people develop their ear skills for everything from just listening to the radio to becoming a better musician to better understanding the theory of music that goes into so much of performance. Working on ear skills really is my favorite thing to do and talk about!

Music Theory

I'm a conductor, pianist, composer, and music theorist with a huge background in music theory. My personal artist's statement centers around the importance of embedding music theory in our day-to-day lives as musicians. It's critical to understand what the feeling is that we associate with sounds, melodies, and harmonies, and *why*—because that knowledge furthers our own emotional connection to the sounds. I'm very passionate and excited about music at all levels, and I love helping people feel the same way about their music and music theory!

Helpful and pleasant tutor

I was struggling with a fundamental of a basic music theory class and was frantically searching for tutors, Sam was very quick to respond and never failed to respond to a message with immense punctuality. When I started going over the concepts with him he not only broke down the subject but he was also very good at finding different learning strategies of the same subject. I was very happy with his help and would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone I know.

Smart and engaging

Sam helped my son to work on analytical musicology essay. Sam is very knowledgeable in music (musicology, history, analysis), possesses kin insight into the nature of the relationship between musical composition and chess playing. He helped my son to organize the ideas for the essay, formulate arguments and offered constructive critique, all while providing crucial feedback on the content and structure of the essay.
