Criminal Justice,

Criminal Justice

During college, I took several criminal justice courses, almost enough for a minor. During law school, my focus was in the area of criminal justice, specifically on family violence law and child abuse. I wrote a published paper on syndrome evidence in child abuse prosecutions. After law school, I became a tribal prosecutor, handling misdemeanor crimes such as disorderly conduct. Later, I consulted with a large tribe on writing provisions in their law and order code regrading domestic violence, child sexual abuse, and sentencing enhancements. I have much material on the various debates going on within the CJ field such as arrest policy, trial procedure, and rehabilitation vs. punishment in corrections.
Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

I have a variety of experiences with public speaking. I took a speech course during college and I participated on a speech team. During law school, I participated on moot court, wherein we present our arguments and speak to the mock court-judge, jury and the opposing counsel. Over time to the present day, I have given workshop presentations as part of my work or for the community, regarding a skill set or providing information; I facilitated a group process with practice and questions and answers. I can critique a student's speech delivery relative to different types of speeches: articulation, demonstration, engaging the audience, and use of visual aids.

As one who has had twenty years of schooling, I have developed study skills/techniques, and a variety of them- to meet different needs: time management, scheduling, subject organization, outlining. History

Social Studies,

Social Studies

I have a B.A. double major in Behavioral Sciences and History, with almost a minor in Criminal Justice. My law school study has focused on social studies areas, such as criminal justice issues and family violence. Throughout my life, I have had experiences with social studies: psychology, social movements, political groups, cultural interactions (Native Amercian tribes). It is easy for me to simplify social studies for a student: I can make it relevant to the student's own life, or select a topic of interest, and discuss.
Sociology,

Sociology

I have a B.A. in Behavioral Sciences, with several hours in Criminal Justice, which both include Sociology. During law school, I continued the focus on social issues and trends in law, as in family law, criminal law, and Indian law. I have had an ongoing life-study of sociology and group dynamics, including social movements, political science, and cultural dynamics (such as Native American tribes). I can simplify sociology for a student by making it relevant to the student's own life, and then we can select a topic of interest to discuss, such as the group environment at school.

Nutrition

I provide here a bio. used for my nutrition classes: Sylvia B., J.D. was profiled in Fitness Plus Magazine, has been a vegan for over 10 years, and over the last 20 years, has focused on self-improvement, addressing several of her own health problems through diet, high endurance exercise, running, weightlifting, and yoga. Health is a passion and a constant work in progress as new things are discovered. In my community classes, I provide information sharing on the latest well-documented information regarding diet, whole and processed foods and herbs, and their effects on the body. Naturopathic and preventative ideas are the focus, addressing the gamut of ailments previously thought to be untreatable, such as diabetes, asthma, arthritis, and cancer. Strategies for how to shop for food, read labels, and meal/portion planning are explored. Handouts/resource info are provided, along with some group exercises and Q & A. Having an alternative health focus, these presentations do not constitute medical advice! I can take a nurtition student though creating their own nutrition plan with options, based on their own physical and lifestyle needs. This will personalize the subject and maintain interest, with the potential for life-changing impact.

ADHD,

ADHD

In life and in teaching, I have worked with ADD/ADHD people and students. And, nowadays, this recently developed psychiatric label can be too zealoulsy applied, resulting in labeling someone with ADD who simply is creative, a good multi-tasker, or a fast thinker. With my educational background in Behavioral Sciences, patience, tenacity, and allowance for the creativity that ADD people have, I can help them gain the focus necessary to achieve a tutoring goal.

Bodybuilding,

Bodybuilding

Profiled in Fitness Plus Magazine in 2003 as a "Vegan Weightlifter", I have been working out in various gyms in the Phoenix area since 1986. I started out in an effort to lose weight I had gained in my early twenties, so over the years have had a wide range of experience working with weights and the interaction between bodybuilding, nutrition, gym facilities, and biomechanics of the wide varieties of equipment. I also bring background in natural remedies, corrective exercise, stretching, and yoga to tailor the exercises to the person's needs. I can come to the student's gym or home and assist in setting up a complete program, whether the goal is to lose weight/attain more definition or gain weight with developing more muscle.
Fitness,

Fitness

I have studied fitness and worked out for my own health improvement for 25 years, including weightlifting, yoga, and high endurance exercise, such as long-distance running. I can describe and demonstrate in a gym and out in the field what exercises are best for various health needs, be it anaerobic or aerobic fitness.
