I currently am self-employed working with children who have been displaced from the mainstream educational system due to their mental health issues. My goal is to provide individualized education, while focusing on curtailing problem behaviors in a positive manner so that re-integration to the public education system can occur.

I have over 15 years experience working in the field of Counseling and Social Work. I have worked in a variety of settings, including: college mental health, inpatient psychiatric, outpatient psychiatric, crisis evaluation, Emergency Room, Hospice and Palliative care, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and elementary/middle schools. I have spent much of my career working to educate others to ensure that we are all providing the best possible services available to our clients, no matter their circumstances.

While working with students, my first goal is to find out what learning style/s are best for that student. I utilize a very positive, encouraging, Person-centered approach to tutoring, to facilitate a learning environment that supports growth and knowledge development.

I was born deaf and utilized ASL as my primary language until I was in my late teen years. When I was a child, I was enrolled in and attended a school for the deaf where the focus was on communicating through ASL. Since then, I have worked as an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing in various settings, from medical appointments, to legal settings to church. I taught 3 classes for ASL in the past, beginner, intermediate and advanced. In the beginner class, students were taught sentence structure, basic words and basic communication skills. In the intermediate class, students were introduced to more in depth communication through ASL and communicating with facial expressions. Participants in this class are encouraged to focus on using ASL to communicate instead of their voice. In the advanced class, participants were to only communicate through ASL. At this level, students would be invited to attend an all deaf/hoh event where their only means of communicating was through ASL.

great tutor w a heart of gold

Dr. Heather has been my tutor for doctoral level social work research methods course. She did a great Job breaking information down and also being a great sounding board to make sure I am going in the right direction. She even met with my teacher to make sure everyone was on the same page with the requirement for the assignments. I really value her as a tutor and all the help she has provided me. She really enjoys research and also makes it really fun to learn the information. I would definitely recommend her for all tutoring levels whether that be bachelor, master, and doctoral levels.

Led a great company lunch and learn about bias!

My company recently hired Heather to conduct an informal lunch and learn session for our employees discussing the Psychology of Bias. Heather pulled together the presentation and materials herself and led an engaging conversation with over 60 people about personal biases, how to be aware of biases, and how to change biases. A few employees even inquired about continuing the conversation 1:1 with her after the meeting. Heather has been great 1:1, and was great and engaging for a larger corporate setting as well. Highly recommend!

Great tutor patient and very knowledgeable

I've been taking a course Assessment and diagnosis this semester and I've been so lost in the class. The professor complicates this course and doesnt go in depth with anything. One hour with Heather and she was able to break things down for me so I could finally grasp what the professor has been teaching for 9 week. She is super patient and knows her stuff.

Knowledgeable and patient

Heather became apart of my academic journey at a time when I needed it the most. As a MSW student takes the time to break down the theories and reviews with me how to apply them in my writing.
