Bio

I graduated from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Painting.

I have taught students from ages 7 to 67. I got my start with teaching when my high school art teacher asked me to do a portrait painting demo for the Art Honor Society kids shortly after I got out of art school. I came back several times to do more. Years later, I taught group classes for still life and figure drawing, as well as a few one on one in-person students. Since...

Since 2019, I have been teaching one on one lessons online very regularly each week.

My style of teaching is generally to show my students of any age the advanced techniques that I use today, and push them to make big leaps with their skills fast! However, we can take it slow if that’s what you prefer. This is the beauty of one on one lessons; we can do whatever you want, focus on whatever subject you are most interested in, and design the lesson in whatever way helps you to learn what you want to learn the best. It’s all about you!

Some students prefer to spend their lessons asking me questions and getting answers about things that they are in the dark about. Some like to work on one or two paintings between lessons, and then get my feedback on what’s working in them, and what could use some adjustments. Oftentimes, I will work on a drawing or painting with students and go step by step together, doing some of the image each lesson over a course of several different lessons. Or, we can also do a few fast sketches in one lesson.

My lessons are all about what the student needs and wants, however, what we cover in your lesson will also be partly determined by your level of expertise. We may need to cover certain things before you can get into some other more advanced things. When you do have something that needs work, I will let you know, but I won’t be too hard on you about it.

Whatever your skill level, however fast or slow you want to go, I want to help you to become a better artist and enjoy it while you’re learning!

Adobe Photoshop,

Adobe Photoshop

I've used Photoshop to create and edit complex photo composites (multiple photos combined into one image) as reference for many, many oil paintings. These files often have dozens of image layers and incorporate various kinds of adjustment layers to alter things like color, contrast, and saturation of different parts of the image. There is often elaborate masking, resizing and cutting up of various parts to be put together in a cohesive scene with correct proportions and perspective of all elements. Along with 30+ years of experience as an oil painter, as well as other creative jobs, I have used Photoshop working in a world class graphic design studio with clients like Revlon, M&Ms & Claritin. I want to share the best and most useful tools and techniques of this extremely versatile, industry standard program with you! Note: You will need to have access to the program, which will likely require you to pay for a monthly membership through Adobe. You can get this for around $11/month.
Drawing,

Drawing

I have been drawing many different subjects for 40+ years, including: portraits, the human figure, landscapes, animals, still life, sci-fi, comics, cartoons, caricatures, manga and anime. I have experience using all major dry media options, including: graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, conte crayon, dry and oil pastel. I have also made digital work in Photoshop. In the past, I've had jobs making signs by hand, doing T-shirt designs, and in a graphic design studio with clients like M&M Mars, Claritin and Revlon, as well as freelance work doing portraits of people, pets and houses, logos, movie poster illustration, album art and packaging design.
Painting

Painting

In my many years of painting commissions and personal work, I have encountered many kinds of tough problems that I figured out and learned from. I have experience painting various subjects, including: portraits, the human figure, landscapes, floral, and still life. You will hear many varied claims from different people about how you should approach oil painting. Many people have certain ideas about this that really come down to their personal preference, or the way that they learned to do it. In several cases, these ideas are just not true. Years ago, I took the Painting Best Practices Seminar with George O’Hanlon, who is a leading authority on the subject, so I have the definitive scientifically founded answers to many issues that some others are only guessing about.

Easygoing and Fun!

Anthony is a great teacher. I have a bit of prior experience, but he was adaptable to my tastes and style and showed me some of the tricks and methods he uses that I hadn't heard about before. Really easy to chat with; I'm definitely continuing my lessons with him!
