Teaching is one of my passions. As a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, I treasure education. Teaching is one of my passions. As a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, I treasure education. In fact, I agree with Benjamin Franklin, the founder of the University of Pennsylvania, who said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Education has been the pathway to a more satisfying and empowered life for just about everyone I know.

I am a former teacher and homeschooler with decades of teaching experience at all levels (K-12). I have a B. S. in Education, with a minor in English, and I have a Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist. I completed all of my coursework and testing for obtaining my PhD in Higher Education – also from the University of Pennsylvania.

My tutoring specialty is standardized test preparation. For more than 20 years, I have professionally tutored and mentored students who received not only outstanding test results and increased test scores; but they also benefited from higher GPA’s and more confidence as a direct effect of my tutoring and their motivation.

My superior strategies have led to consistent student improvement on the SAT, ACT, GRE, SSAT, and ISEE. In fact, my students have been accepted to some of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, including Princeton University, Brown University, Cornell University, University of PA, Duke University, Williams College, Boston University, Connecticut College, Wellesley College, Tufts University, University of Virginia, Rice University, Carnegie Mellon University, Southern Methodist University, Gettysburg College, etc.

Whatever the subject, I strive to challenge my students to reach optimum achievement without becoming overwhelmed or unduly stressed. For me and for them, tutoring should be a win-win situation.

As a result of my years of tutoring experience, I have created several proprietary products, courses, and worksheets for teaching the following subjects and test preparation courses: SAT, ACT, GRE, SSAT, ISEE, elementary and middle school mathematics, K-12 reading, and ESL/ESOL.

I am an ESL/ESOL teacher who emphasizes conversation and communication skills. We generally judge others’ facility in a language by their ability to speak the language. I want my students to be confident, comfortable conversationalists. As a high school teacher, I taught ESL/ESOL to students from various countries, including: • Vietnam, Cambodia, and other countries in Southeast Asia; • Poland, Greece, and other countries in Europe; • Iran; • Puerto Rico • Dominican Republic • Mexico • Central and South America As a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a minor in English, I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of teaching English. I help my students master a broad range of English, focusing on: • grammar, • mechanics, • proper word choice, • useful vocabulary for school, business, work, and daily life; • sentence structure, and • American English idioms which are essential for everyday communication. I encourage my students to listen, speak, and read during our tutoring sessions and to write during their homework assignments.
Grammar,

Grammar

I love writing, and I am the author of several books. I love teaching English grammar. In fact, diagramming sentences and delving deeply into the rules of standard written English is a pleasurable past time for me. Knowledge is power, and mastering English grammar can be a deeply empowering experience. A strong foundation in English grammar is essential for college-bound students. Whatever your proposed career path, you will be expected to master English grammar. Most business people need to write clear reports and presentations. Virtually every admissions test for graduate or professional school heavily weights a student’s proficiency in English grammar. Even math and science heavy careers (such as engineering and medical) require excellence in English grammar and composition. I tutor many students in SAT/ACT test prep, and the weakest area for many students is English grammar. Standard written English is simply not taught as rigorously as it was when I attended middle school and high school, and today’s students need to study grammar extensively. Fortunately, I can help you to pass that all-important entrance exam or get the promotion you want by mastering English grammar.

I am a born proofreader. I actually enjoy the process. As an English minor from the University of Pennsylvania, proofreading comes naturally to me. I have even had a professional newspaper publisher submit a document to me that had been previously proofread by two highly intelligent and knowledgeable writers. Believe it or not, I found several additional errors that were pretty blatant to me. If you are looking for a meticulous, fastidious proofreader, you need look no further. I’m the one. If you are an author who wants an extra set of eyes to proofread your content, just contact me. If you are a student whose eyes have glazed over after reading and rereading your paper for the past few days, and you can’t stand to look at it any more, call me. Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been certified by the states of both Pennsylvania and New Jersey as an elementary teacher for grades K-8 and as a Reading Specialist (grades K-12). Although I have taught elementary school students beginning in 1970, I have taken time off to raise my own children. From 2011-2013, I supervised an after school program at my local elementary school, where I also taught various subjects such as social and emotional behavior, as well as cooking, gym, and other subjects. I also supervised homework help, music, etc. During the summers, I taught mad scientist experiments which the children adored.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I love mathematics, and I teach it with passion and enthusiasm. With my help, you can build the strong foundation you need to excel in high school mathematics (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, PreCalculus, and Calculus). I help you master all facets of elementary math including: • Whole numbers • Fractions / decimals / percent • Geometry • Measurement • Probability • Arithmetic concepts • Data analysis • Tables, graphs, charts • Measures of central tendency
Elementary Science,

Elementary Science

Wasn't science just about everyone’s favorite subject in elementary school? Who doesn't like experiments and explosions? Did you ever wonder what happened to the spirit of scientific adventure we all had as children? Well, it’s still there – waiting to be re-awakened. That’s where I come in. I still love science after all these years, and I can help your student love it, too. As a K-8 teacher, I taught science to my students twice a week. As the Site Coordinator of an After-School Program and as a summer camp teacher, I taught “mad scientist” experiment that my students absolutely loved. My area of expertise includes various topics within the following areas: • Life science • Human body and its systems • Physical science • Earth science

Phonics,

Phonics

I have a Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist from the University of Pennsylvania, and I've been teaching students to read for more than 40 years. As a Reading Specialist (K-12), certified by both the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, I taught phonics daily as part of my elementary school reading program. I provided remediation for high school students who required supplementary reading instruction during my work as a Reading Specialist Teacher in New Jersey. When a students has poor word attack skills or trouble with reading comprehension, his or her difficulties can affect all academic areas, but especially English, Social Studies or History, Science, Foreign Languages, and even mathematics. I tutor students in SAT/ACT test preparation, and most of the errors I see on the Mathematics sections of those tests can be directly attributed to faulty reading. Students might misunderstand what the word problem is asking. They might misread test instructions or be unable to discern the main idea of the short or long passages in the critical reading section. I help my students become very skilled at identifying and rephrasing (restating in their own words) the main idea of the passages we read. Depending on the student’s level, we proceed sequentially through the following skills: • Letter formation • Phonics • Sight words • Reading comprehension (main idea, following directions, drawing inferences, close reading for details, varying reading rate according to the type of material being read, critical thinking abilities, drawing conclusions, etc.)

Spelling,

Spelling

Many people discount the importance of spelling – especially in our age of word processing and spell-checking software. However, I know that good spelling is necessary if you want to become a good and fluent reader, and compelling writer, or a robust communicator. As a test-taking strategist, I know how important spelling is to help you determine the etymology, and therefore, the meaning of words. Good spellers simply perform better on standardized tests than non-spellers. This means, on average good spellers will perform better on the SAT, ACT, GRE, SSAT, ISEE, … For more than 35 years, I’ve worked with students to develop strong communications skills and build a complete template of strategies in all of the language arts. I will use my experience to help you become a competent speller. If you are looking for a spelling tutor, contact me.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

For more than 25 years, I have worked part-time as an educational consultant and tutor, helping motivated students successfully navigate the college admissions pipeline. I taught standardized test preparation, study skills, test-taking strategies, and methodologies to decrease test anxiety. As a result of their efforts and my study skills training, my students were able to increase their SAT and ACT test scores and almost invariably they were accepted to colleges which were the right fit for them. • Organization • Study strategies • Increasing comprehension • Time management • Concentration and focus • Test-taking strategies • Note-taking • Avoiding procrastination • Outlining • Reference skills • Dictionary skills • Communication I assess the student's requirements and teach the appropriate study skills techniques.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a college consultant and standardized test preparation expert, I know how important vocabulary is. Most of the tests we encounter as we prepare for college are very much vocabulary-driven. I have several vocabulary programs that I recommend to my students, including one that I created. I also have several proven vocabulary-building techniques that have helped students develop an Ivy League vocabulary. It works for any student who wants to grow a college-level vocabulary, and it is excellent preparation for acing the SAT / ACT / GRE / SSAT ISEE.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

As an author, an English minor, and a communications devotee, I absolutely love the ACT English section. The English section is comprised of multiple choice questions. An essay is optional. Students who work hard and study the grammar, usage, and mechanics review I give them, can look forward to improving their writing score a great deal. We focus on the areas of standard written English that are most frequently tested in the ACT English section, such as subject-verb agreement, ambiguous pronouns, parallel construction, dangling modifiers, coordination and subordination, etc. It’s simple and easy. If the students put in the work, and if they start their review in a timely manner, they can expect to reap the rewards of an improved ACT English score. I recommend starting 10-12 weeks prior to their desired test date, but we can accomplish a great deal in a shorter time window if the student is motivated and devotes sufficient time to study. I give the students a template for writing the essay, with recommendations concerning the amount of time to devote to each area of essay-writing.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

Most students, no matter how bright, approach the ACT Reading Section with fear and trepidation. The reading section of the ACT is a heavily vocabulary-driven test, so I work with students to improve their vocabulary. I also provide students with strategies they can use to identify the best answer to every question. I show them how to approach the questions so that the correct answers are virtually as quantifiable as the correct answers to math questions are. The correct answer to the passage-based reading questions are not subject to individual interpretation. With the right approach, students can easily find the best answer. They must get inside the heads of the creators of the ACT, and I give them the keys to deciphering the best answer and determining why it can be proven to be the “best” answer.
English,

English

I am a University of Pennsylvania alumna with a degree in Education and a minor in English. As a K-12 teacher, I taught English grammar and composition for many years as part of my traditional curriculum. As a test-taking specialist, I have instructed students on the most crucial aspects of standard written English which appear frequently on achievement tests and on aptitude tests like the SAT, GRE, SSAT, ISEE, and PSAT. I make sure my students have a thorough and comprehensive grounding in the strategies necessary for success in any English curriculum at any level (Kindergarten – graduate and professional school). As a writer and internet publisher, I am adept at teaching the following English composition skills: • Writing and Thinking • Writer’s purpose • Writer’s audience • Choosing and limiting a subject • Tone • Gathering information • Arranging information • Proofreading, revising, and editing • Structure and Development of Paragraphs • Persuasive writing • Expository writing • Descriptive writing • Imaginative and Expressive Writing • Writing a research paper • Effective diction If you want help in English, just contact me.

I recommend starting 10-12 weeks prior to their desired test date, but we can accomplish a great deal in a shorter time window if the student is motivated and devotes sufficient time to study. I give the students a template for writing the essay, with recommendations concerning the amount of time to devote to each area of essay-writing.

SAT Math,

For many students, the SAT is probably one of the most demanding tests they will ever take. It plays a large role in determining if they get accepted into the college of their choice. If they score highly enough, it may determine their eligibility for scholarship aid. Over the past 20 years, I have helped students master both the SAT and the ACT. My students have been accepted into some of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, including Princeton University, University of PA, Duke University, Rice University, Pomona College, Claremont-McKenna College, Williams College, Wellesley College, Tufts University, Southern Methodist University, Brown University, Swarthmore College, Haverford College, etc. I like to begin each tutoring session with a real, Practice SAT, taken under test conditions. This requires almost four hours, but it gives us a good baseline. I cover all 8 question types and all three sections (reading, writing, and mathematics) of the SAT. Our sessions will be customized to your strengths and weakness, so you get the most out of each session, and score the highest score you can score – if you put in the time and effort. My proven strategies and tactics can help you succeed. Each tutoring session is 2 hours long. When I teach SAT Math, I make sure my students know what types of topics are covered on the test and how the college board generally tests those topics. Most students, no matter how bright, approach the SAT Critical Reading Section with fear and trepidation. The reading section of the SAT is a heavily vocabulary-driven test, so I work with students to improve their vocabulary. They must get inside the heads of the creators of the SAT, and I give them the keys to deciphering the best answer and determining why it can be proven to be the “best” answer. My proven strategies and tactics can help you succeed. Each tutoring session is 2 hours long.

Wasn’t science just about everyone’s favorite subject in elementary school? Who doesn’t like experiments and explosions? Did you ever wonder what happened to the spirit of scientific adventure we all had as children. Well, it’s still there – waiting to be re-awakened. That’s where I come in. I still love science after all these years, and I can help your student love it, too. More importantly, I can show you how to score your highest on the ACT Science Reasoning Test. You don’t have to love science to ace the ACT Science section, but you do need to master the art of pacing yourself so that you don’t run out of time before you complete the test. Some key strategies you can use are to make sure you read the data representation passages first. Also, make notes or make bullet points in the test booklet. That way, the main ideas are easily accessible to you and you won't waste a lot of time looking for the answers.

Study Skills

Cooking

I have been certified by the states of both Pennsylvania and New Jersey as an elementary teacher for grades K-8. From 2011-2013, I supervised an after school program at my local public school, where I also taught all aspects of cooking. I planned the lessons, purchased ingredients, and encouraged active participation by my students. They enjoyed the lessons tremendously. In fact, many students said that cooking was their favorite class. I have also prepared menus for people with specialized diet requirements. I’ve worked with vegetarians, vegans, and raw foodists.

I also supervised homework help, music, etc. During the summers, I taught mad scientist experiments which the children adored.
ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I am an ESL/ESOL teacher who emphasizes conversation and communication skills. We generally judge others’ facility in a language by their ability to speak the language. SAT Math,

SAT Math

I also show my students how to get inside the minds of the college board - test creators. That empowers students with the confidence and insight they require to attack every problem.

Writing

In addition to my work as a tutor, I am an author and publisher of many books, training programs, videos, etc. Writing is extremely important to me, and it is an essential foundation of all communication in the world of work. I have extensive experience with writing, proofreading, editing, and helping others master the same skillset as I have. As a K-12 teacher, teaching writing was a fundamental responsibility of mine. I have had the awesome privilege of helping students develop the power of communicate through standard written English.

Test Preparation

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I am a math nerd. My eyes actually light up when I see an intriguing math problem. When I teach ACT Mathematics, I make sure my students know what types of topics are covered on the test and how the test creators generally tests those topics. I also show my students how to get inside the minds of the test creators. That empowers students with the confidence and insight they require to attack every problem correctly.

ACT Science,

ACT Science

ISEE,

ISEE

For more than 15 years, I have tutored students to take and pass the Independent School Entrance Examination so that they could gain admission to some of the top schools in the country. I am trained in educational testing and test administration, as well as in test-taking techniques and tactics to reduce test anxiety. I completed all of the coursework requirements for obtaining my Ph.D. in measurement and testing at the University of Pennsylvania – including passing a rigorous six-hour written examination that was pre-requisite for my degree. I currently help students in all areas of the ISEE, including Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematical Reading. I also provide strategies and suggestions for writing the all-important essay. Elite private schools use the ISEE not only as one component of the admission process, but they also consider it a predictor of the student’s future academic success at their institution. In addition to helping my students get admitted to elite institutions and programs throughout the United States, I can also assist these students with advice on the school selection process so they can be more confident that the school they want to enroll in is a good fit for them.

PSAT,

PSAT

The PSAT is given to high school in October of their junior year. Most parents focus on getting their children prepared for the SAT and/or ACT, but they ignore the PSAT/NMSQT. That is a huge mistake. The PSAT/NMSQT is a critically important part of the college search process. Colleges use the scores and information your student provides on the PSAT/NMSQT to begin recruiting you. It also places you in serious contention for scholarship money from the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and other associated programs. The PSAT/NMSQT is similar to the SAT – only shorter. There is a reading section, a math section, and a writing section. There is no essay. Your score on the PSAT is frequently a good indicator of how much preparation you need for the SAT. If you want to jump-start your college search process and your scholarship hunt, and have colleges chasing you, and not the other way around, I encourage you to get tutoring help for the PSAT/NMSQT. There’s simply too much at stake not to do so.

SSAT,

SSAT

I am the mother of five adult children, and at one time, I had four children in elite independent schools. I know the SSAT exam inside and out. Having helped serious students get accepted to private day and residential schools for more than 25 years, I know precisely what you need to do to get the acceptance letter you desire. The SSAT is comprised of a Verbal Section, and Quantitative Section, and an unscored essay. The Reading Comprehension section consists of 40 questions based both narrative and argument reading passages. I give my students a ton of strategies to employ on the SSAT, but I also make sure that they have mastered the content which is tested. The analogies section drives most students crazy, so I’ve developed specific strategies you can employ – even when you don’t know the meaning of one or more of the words. Like most standardized aptitude tests, the SSAT is very heavily vocabulary-driven, so I start with a demanding program of studying roots and prefixes as part of a vocabulary-building program. We also do a thorough review of the mathematics that generally is generally tested on the exams. If you want an SSAT tutor, you need look no further. Just contact me, and let’s get started.

Great SAT prep

My daughter found Angela to be an excellent teacher. They focused on improving grammar for the SAT. The tutoring session was very last minute (3 Kaplan class cancellations--no make up planned for 2 missed classes & her test is in 6 days!) We are very grateful for Angela’s excellent tutoring. It has made a big difference. So glad for the Wyzant platform to find tutoring resources. On a side note, I would NOT recommend Kaplan prep to anyone based on our experience. Thank you!

Very patient and cooperative

Takes time to allow you to process what you need and allows you to work and comprehend what the answers are. Begins with giving a strong foundation of knowledge, and material before she proceeds with questions.

Knowledgeable teacher but..

My daughter received remote tutoring for SSAT from Angela for 2 months. She is a good teacher. She can explain concepts well and engage the student to pay attention. She seems very knowledgeable with the topic. I do feel she is disorganized and not detail oriented. She cancelled our first tutoring session 24 hours after scheduling it and she didn’t how up for another session. I understand she had a family emergency but I feel she still should have texted me to cancel the appointment. We arranged our whole day around the tutoring session during our vacation so it was disappointing she didn’t show up. She also kept calling my daughter and me by different names and misspelled our daughter’s name repeatedly. We worked with her for 2 months and felt she should have gotten our names right. It was also strange she would not turn on the video during the video calls. My daughter could only hear her voice and not see her face. It was already difficult tutoring remotely and not being able to see her face made it impersonal and not as effective.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor - highly recommend!

Angela worked with my daughter for about a month, 3 times a week, to prep her for the ISEE exam. She really enjoyed working with her and would highly recommed Angela.
