Welcome to Dr. Dorrie’s qualifications and information page. I am currently certified for science teaching in Connecticut (Grades 7-12) including cross certifications for Biology, Earth Science and General Science. I received an Award of Excellence for my Praxis Test in the General Science Content Knowledge exam.

I am the teacher who motivates students to learn how to use science to solve problems and subsequently understand how the world works. I can do this by incorporating the 5 E’s of learning science: 1) Engage - Capture the students’ attention, stimulate their thinking, and activate their prior knowledge; 2) Explore – Motivate the students to explore the concepts through a set of experiences; 3) Explain – Encourage the students to find ways to construct their own knowledge of the concept; 4) Elaborate - Give the students opportunities to extend their understanding and apply their knowledge to real life situations; and 5) Evaluate – Assess the students’ understanding of the concepts using both formative and summative approaches. I am very interested in working with students who are passionate about environmental science.

When working with students, I embrace the teaching philosophy of the Learning Paradigm. Here I focus on the most important goal – how much the student has learned in any given tutoring session. I encourage my students’ curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, participation, public presentation, and short-term and long-term goals. Within this framework, I develop reciprocity between students and me, give prompt feedback, encourage active learning techniques, emphasize time on task, communicate high expectations, and respect my students’ diverse talents and ways of learning. One main principle that I focus on in all of my tutoring endeavors is the Learning Paradigm where students take an active role in their learning. My role as a science and math tutor secondary school science teacher is to interact with my student to facilitate his/her learning. Thus, the student focuses on content, ski

I have over 30 years of experience in the environmental science field. I have an advanced degree in ecology and have taught all levels of students as follows: graduate students, undergraduate students, high school Environmental Science (APES, Honors Environmental Science, General Environmental Science). In addition, I have worked with students in small classroom settings of one to four students; these students had social / emotional issues regarding their learning. My informal teaching experience includes all different grade levels such as: 1) Leading informal river educational field trips for various groups including a Girl Scout troop; 2) Presenting lessons for elementary and middle school students at their respective schools; 3) Assisting high school students in testing their own drinking water supply and giving lessons while living and working overseas in Palau; 4) Working as a Teaching Assistant while obtaining my PhD in Ecology; and 5) Designing and teaching an environmental science course to adults at a community college. I have worked in academia, private consulting, a foreign government (the country of Palau in Micronesia), and as a volunteer for a non-profit organization. I have lived in and studied numerous locations and environment throughout the United States including Connecticut, New York, Vermont, Colorado, California, and Utah. Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Dr. Dorrie was great! She helped me understand how to write out and balance worded equations, predict the products of double replacement reactions, as well as convert the formulas into mole to mole, gram to mole and gram to gram relationship. The lesson was very efficient and we took advantage of every minute. I would definitely recommend Dr. Dorrie.

very knowledgeable and patient

Dr. Dorrie has been tutoring my son for HS Biology and we are very impressed with the progress our son has made in class. She is very knowledgeable, patient, does not mind repeating a topic and ensures that the student has thoroughly understood each topic before moving to the next one. Always arrives for the lesson on time and communicates regularly with us. I would highly recommend Dr Dorrie to any other students struggling with Biology.
