I am a classically trained musician who studied with top professionals in my field in New York, Paris, and at the Conservatoire de Fontainebleau in France. I have been a conductor, a pianist, and a composer, and am now retired. I have also been a writer on musical subjects and a music critic.

I teach piano to those who want to achieve a high level of proficiency at the piano. My lessons incorporate tone production, interpretation, sight reading, and theory. I teach a piano technique that facilitates beautiful playing and avoids the all too common repetitive motion injuries to which so many serious amateurs and professionals are prone. And I believe that hours of mind numbing piano exercise only result in teaching a student to play unmusically.

I have had excellent training, a lifetime of experience, and I am able to communicate in a manner that is understandable to students of all ages and levels of expertise.

If you want to learn to play the piano well, improve your ability to play, or bring existing capabilities to a polished level, you will find in me a teacher eager and able to share skills and understanding acquired over a lifetime spent in pursuit of the beauty of music and the joy it can bring.

Music History

As a graduate of an excellent college of music and a diplomate of one of the premier music conservatories in Europe, I have a strong background in the 1200 year history and evolution of western classical music from its origins in Gregorian chant through the Renaissance, Baroque Classical periods up to the present day. My areas of special study are the transition to the Romantic era (Beethoven and Schubert), the transition from the late Romantic (Buckner, Mahler and Richard Strauss) to very different paths taken by Schoenberg, Bartok and Stravinsky, and the other great composers of the 20th century.

Piano

I have studied, played, and written music for the piano all my life. I received thorough training in the Taubman approach which is a method that was codified by Dorothy Taubman in response to the alarmingly large number of serious students and professional pianists who came to her seeking relief from piano related hand and arm injuries ranging from excessive fatigue and tension, to repetitive motion injuries often leading to great and eventually debilitating pain. I teach her methods which have the added benefits of teaching students to use motions of the hand and forearm that result in a more beautiful tone, greater control, an ability to play faster and for longer periods without getting tired, and, by virtue of avoiding movements that cause stress to the delicate muscles and tendons of the fingers and hands, allow a student to progress more rapidly than do the traditional methods used by most teachers. For example, I have a seven year old student who has been taking lessons for only seven months who is playing Beethoven's Für Elise. When we began, she could not read a note of music and had no relationship with her hands.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

Ear training is an essential part of the training required to become a musician from the recognition of simple intervals to the ability to hear and notate complex lines and chord progressions and their rhythms. I was trained in every aspect of ear training from learning of the intervals, which enables a student to pick up a new song or part of a coral work and be able to sing it immediately, to taking four part dictation which ultimately allows one hear music, whether performed by others or in one's own head, and write it down. I teach solfege employing the French syllables to facilitate the mastery of the fixed DO method and encourage the memorization of the pitch of A440 to allow a student to be able to reproduce that pitch at will, and find or recognize all the other pitches resulting in the acquisition of accurate relative pitch.

Piano lessons

Leni is very detailed and Patient! My teenage son had his first lesson today and his explanations were perfect because he used sport analogies that my my teenage basketball player could relate to. Leninis very organized in his approach and has a plan that will help our son grow. After the lesson he got it and is excited about the next lesson.

First lesson with Leni

The lesson was over fingering techniques. My son learned a lot and it was an eye opening experience for both of us.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

I was a little concerned about my 5 year-old not wanting to take piano lessons. Leni has been a great tutor and inspiration for him - my son now looks forward to seeing him and learn every week.
