Hello prospective students, my name is Scott. I am a motivated science and math tutor with over 2 years of experience. I have helped many types of students with different styles of learning to achieve their academic goals!
I spent most of my high school years informally helping my classmates with advanced algebra, geometry, and various chemistry classes. I knew I had a knack for those classes, and it gave my great satisfaction to be able to help those who needed some extra support. I formally began tutoring General and Organic Chemistry in College as a volunteer in the Chemistry department. In my time there, I tutored over two-dozen students, many of whom came multiple times a week. Several students came to me over multiple semesters as well. Many of my students were high achievers looking to get that extra boost to keep a competitive GPA for medical school applications. Some of my students were science majors looking to expand their understanding to give them a solid foundation for the rest of their education. There were also students who just needed a guiding force to keep them on track to graduate. Nevertheless, I enjoyed working with all of them!
The majority of my students were also taking math classes, and found that it was easier to come to me for support than have to also coordinate with the math department. I covered courses such as College Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Differential Equations.
My strategy for working with students in math and science starts with teaching the fundamentals first and then moving into homework or example problems. I feel that this allows the student to gain more confidence, foster problem solving, and allow them to navigate tests with more ease. I focus on identifying gaps at each step of the process of solving a problem, this allows me to avoid wasted time and focus on the areas the student needs the most help in. A student seeking chemistry tutoring may have a great understanding of chemistry concepts, but may struggle with the algebra to solve the problem; I seek to ident
