Since high school I have had the privilege of working in education. I began while I was still a high school sophomore myself as an after-school Spanish tutor; there I discovered my love and knack for teaching. The next year I was accepted as a Teacher’s Assistant alongside a Master Educator who was eager to grow and equip me as an educator. Over the next several years I substitute taught for nearly every grade of elementary school.

During my time at Biola University I became a Teacher’s Assistant again, this time for a Linguistics class. I was able to make real-life connections and provide illustrations that opened the complex field of linguistics to a broader range of students. This also gave me the opportunity to tutor more, both individually and in groups, with undergrad and graduate students who sought me out for my ability to break down complex concepts into smaller pieces and find helpful analogies and illustrations.

As a tutor, I recognize that everyone learns differently and that approaches to teaching are largely about finding ways to provide the "aha!" moments that ignite a student’s passion or instill the confidence to keep trying for the student who needs extra time and explanations My goal is to equip students to take ownership of their education, and I do not consider myself to have succeeded until I have found a teaching approach that works for you or your child specifically. I am passionate about both learning and teaching and see tutoring as an opportunity to arrange victories for students.

I understand that work and family life can be crazy and unpredictable, so I only ask for two hours of warning if you need to cancel a session.

I look forward to partnering with you to find the best way to meet your educational needs!

Elementary Education

Phonics,

Phonics

Having focused on applied linguistics during my undergrad and now pursuing my Master's degree in Linguistics and Biblical Language, I am very familiar with way the human mouth produces sounds. For three semesters I was a TA for Introduction to Language and Linguistics, during which time I had the opportunity to introduce dozens of students to the study of sounds. It has been my experience that when phonetics is understood rather than memorized, students become equipped as language learners for the rest of their lives.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I had the privilege of attending a college preparatory school which emphasized study skills in order to set students up for success at college. I was able to apply those tools well and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Biola University. As a Teacher's Assistant and tutor, I have also had to learn how to pass those skills on to others in order to equip them to take ownership of their education.

History

Anthropology,

Anthropology

My undergraduate degree, Intercultural Studies, is closely related to Anthropology. As an ICS major, I studied subjects such as cultural anthropology, village and tribal cultures, and linguistic anthropology. I received straight A's in these courses.
Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

I was born and raised in a home where the Bible was read daily and weekly church attendance was non-optional. I attended private Christian schools, Sunday school, Bible studies, Vacation Bible School, etc. I have also studied the Bible at the university level from both non-Christian and Christian professors.
Classics

Classics

As an undergrad I was a member of the Torrey Honors Institute. THI is a Great Books Program which replaces typical general education courses. Torrey students read the great Western classics (from Plato to Dostoevsky to Austen) and discuss them in cohort groups using the Socratic method. Over my four years there, I spent nearly a thousand hours discussing and writing about over 100 classic texts.
