As a writer/editor with over 25 years of experience, and an MA in Communications/Public Relations and a BA in English, I have enjoyed writing and editing for print and the Web.

As a writer/editor with over 25 years of experience, and an MA in Communications/Public Relations and a BA in English, I have enjoyed writing and editing for print and the Web.

College entrance essays, personal communications, newspaper articles, webpages, business writing, master degree theses, and doctoral dissertations are among the types of writing and editing with which I have lots of experience.

Additionally, I was a student writing evaluator of a collegiate learning assessment for a New York City company. In this capacity, I judged writing effectiveness, writing mechanics (such as grammar), critical analysis, and problem solving skills. All of these constitute the foundation of SAT writing, and I enjoy helping students hone these skills through SAT tutoring.

In high school I won the English award and graduated from college summa cum laude.

My approach to your writing is in terms of a wordcrafter, helping you express your thoughts the way you want them to sound with attention to correct grammar, sentence structure, and the like. After all, I want to keep true to the integrity of your writing since it is an expression of you. I just add polish to your ideas.

I tend to be informal and try to make the process an enjoyable learning experience.

Hope we can work together!

P.S. I enjoy working with ESL students and recently earned a certificate in Teaching ESL!

ESL tutoring is so rewarding because students are motivated to learn. I have worked with native speakers from many different countries and they all want the same thing--to understand and to be understood. Not only do we work hard to attain this goal, but we have fun doing it. I like to establish a trusting, informal atmosphere of learning, armed with a certificate in teaching English as a second language and plenty of hands-on experience. In addition to private ESL tutoring, I have tutored through The English School in Lawrenceville, N.J. for the past three years.

In addition to over 25 years of freelance writing and editing with experience ranging from corporate communications to promotional material for a chamber music series, my extensive experience also includes interviewing numerous subjects for newspaper and magazine articles. As communications director and content department head for a digital media company, I created themes and slogans, critiqued business proposals, wrote and edited web pages, brochures and other promotional materials, and managed proofreading/quality assurance. Recently, I was senior editor and project manager for a book published by Sphere First Publishing. My poems and articles have been published in magazines and newspapers, and choirs have sung my commissioned lyrics.

Proofreading

My editing experience is in both print and digital. I regularly edit master candidates’ research papers, theses, and doctoral dissertations, business letters, and books-in-progress, as well as students' college essays and statements. I have also worked with pharmaceutical companies to edit monographs and other product information, and as an independent contractor for a healthcare communications company. Currently, I am editor-in-chief for Sphere Publishing Company. My approach to editing is often as a wordcrafter, helping to polish my client’s ideas while staying true to his or her individual voice with attention to issues such as grammar, sentence structure, and narrative flow. Focusing on the integrity of my client’s writing is important to me since it is an expression of that person. I have worked with students ranging in age from elementary school to postgraduate, as well as with many people for whom English is a second language.

Extremely knowledgeable and patient teacher

Arlene taught my son 12th grade English. My son was a bit behind and struggling to learn how to write better and use grammar in a more precise way. Arlene connected to my son personally and drew from him strengths to guide him through his weaknesses. He learned better from her than he did from a private tutoring center he went to for ACT Prep! She is an accomplished writer/editor and one of the nicest people you will ever meet! She is genuine, smart, patient, organized and the best English teacher any of my children have ever had! My son is very fond of her and they have established a wonderful friendship. I would highly recommend Arlene as a professional, friendly and reliable teacher.

Thorough and helpful

Arlene was very helpful and patient with reviewing middle school grammar skills… She explained the material so that my daughter could thoroughly understand. I feel my daughter is more prepared for her upcoming tests.

Great Tutor!

Arlene was amazing. Really helped me understand what I was doing wrong rather than just fixing my essay. She is knowledgeable and helpful, right to the point, showing me other avenues to make corrections. With every session, based on her advice, I was able to fine-tune my writings and re-shape my essays while learning how to better express myself in the future. She also kept the sessions flexible and made herself available at odd hours, whenever I needed help. I could not have done it without her enormous help. Thank you!

A+ Tutor, Always available and willing to help

Regardless of what your needs are, Arlene will help you to improve your English skills. Arlene was helping my daughter to prepare for English section of SAT and essay. Arlene suggested an approach on how to improve essay writing skills and how to organize lessons to maximize learning time and minimize "idling" (essay review and correction) time. This worked out great for my daughter and improved her essay writing skills. As far as English section, Arlene was able to improve my daughter's reading comprehension and sentence completion skills and SAT score, and to increase her vocabulary. Thank you Arlene for your help with my daughter's SAT tutoring.

Outstanding, patient tutor

Arlene mentored and helped advise our son from university selection to planning, editing, and completing college application essays, as well as tutoring for SAT writing. She was very professional, friendly, and always available. As parents who have been through the UK education system from elementary school to university, it has always been a challenge and a learning curve at each step of our son's education. Arlene took all the stress and pressure out by taking control through the whole process. We would highly recommend her. So far our son has two confirmed early university offers with two more looking highly likely. Thank you, Arlene. You have been a lifesaver!
