I have a Masters in Special Education with an emphasis in Learning Disabilities and more than 20 years experience teaching Special Needs Students. In addition, I completed a post-masters course program in the Multisensory Teaching of Basic Skills at Teachers College, Columbia University. This is a two-year series of six courses. These courses are designed to prepare teachers to work with individuals who are experiencing unusual difficulty in acquiring oral and written skills. These students have been identified as having dyslexia, a reading disability, or other related learning disorders and range in age from kindergarten to adult. The curriculum uses an Orton-Gillingham model of direct instruction, and teaches the scientific structure of the English language. Teachers learn techniques for teaching reading, Alphabetic Phonics, spelling, dictionary skills, oral and written expression, and strategies for comprehension.
