I live just outside of Middleton, WI. I have worked with middle-school and/or high school youth groups in my church from 1995-2001, and again in 2004-05. I have tutored 8th grade students at Jefferson Middle School in Madison in 2013. I have helped my 20-something peers in the 80's on their college courses, tutored a 55+ woman going back to Madison College during the 90's, helped a couple of my youth group students with their homework, and assisted many students in the mid-to-late 2000's during my stints at a middle-school in Iowa and at Rawhide (residence & school for troubled teen boys). My undergrad GPA was 3.5 and my graduate GPA was 4.0.

As illustrated above, I have worked with students of various ages and skill abilities. I learn where students are at, what they're willing to do, and help them to the next level of achievement, whether they are passing a course, or just in need some general help. I can also teach study skills, as I have done with our 6th-grade students. As a former middle-school counselor (previously certified elementary through high school), I understand the needs and difficulties of students, and build a fast rapport with most students. One of my duties at the middle school was to call into my office each student who had at least one failing grade towards the end of the trimester, and advise them what it would take to pass. One of my most satisfying compliments came from a parent whose middle-school student I worked with: "I don't think he would have passed without you."

I have taught study skills to 6th graders. Listed here are a few examples: Get a proper night's sleep, do the easy questions first, eat a proper breakfast, do not cram, ask the teacher questions if unsure, and when you freeze on a test, think of a happier place or state for a minute or two and try to refocus after that.
