My greatest strength as a tutor (beyond really knowing the subjects I tutor) is my ability to adapt to and match the way you learn. A close second is my ability to take abstract concepts and make them much more understandable. I don’t do “tricks” since it takes as much effort to memorize tons of tricks as it does to actually learn the stuff (though I do have plenty of ideas on how to do things more easily). How I Work:
Instead of just repeating what your teacher’s already gone over in class, I’m provide another way of looking at the things that are giving you trouble. Having actually taught in classrooms for over twelve years, I can help you understand why your teacher’s teaching a given topic, how it fits into the “big picture”, and what to watch out for in the future.

I’m excellent at what I do and I adapt to meet your needs. I draw upon the recent advances in brain research to help you perceive and retain what you're learning more effectively. I usually don't administer diagnostic tests because students typically already have a good idea of what their problem is, at least on the surface. Instead, as we start working together, I’ll ask you to show me how to do a problem you’re working on or to explain a term or two. This gives me the information I need to assess your situation. I’m pretty good at sensing where students’ problems are. At the end of the session and periodically thereafter, I’ll give you (and your parents if appropriate) an idea of how things stand and where to go next. If you want me to administer a diagnostic test, I have them available as well.

Success in Algebra-1 is the key to a student’s success in every math and science course they’ll take in high school. It’s the course that moves you from elementary school arithmetic to the powerful math that every math and science course you’re going to take will draw upon. Build a strong algebra foundation and you will be able to use that knowledge in all your future classes. If you’re having trouble in Algebra-1, there are two likely problem areas…. 1) the math using fractions, multiplication, square roots, etc is so hard or so confusing that you simply can’t do the calculations your teacher needs you to do, or 2) your teacher’s lectures don’t make any sense and you end up trying to memorize rule after confusing rule. And when you have no idea how to succeed, it makes total sense to give up and work on another course that does make sense… if you’re going to be stuck with a bad math grade, it makes sense to get an “A” in another course to balance it out. The only problem is, you still have a bad grade and your math is going to get increasingly impossible to do. Since I have succeeded in helping young math students finally be able to do fractions, square roots, negative numbers, etc, I know how to help you finally learn the math skills that have given you so much grief. And once you know how to do the basic math, you can work on learning the algebra your teacher is teaching. The other way that I help students succeed in learning Algebra-1 is I teach the course differently than your teacher does… rather than lecturing and teaching you complicated rules on how to move numbers and letters around the page, I work with you like a math coach where I show you how to do the skills you need. But, because I had low seniority, I was given the students other teachers didn’t want to teach... students who didn’t naturally “get math”... students who were tougher to teach because they struggled. I learned from my students that their problems stemmed from poor teaching/bad situations before that had caused gaps in their learning and I learned how to fix those problems while I taught them algebra 2 at the same time. I'm also really good at teaching the dreaded *two-column proof* and if you have an old-school teacher who is still teaching constructions, I know how to teach constructions, too.

I draw on over a decade's experience as a HS pre-calculus teacher to help students in their pre-calculus course. Pre-calculus is probably the most challenging HS math course due to how much material is presented and how quickly the course goes. It is easily the most abstract course students have taken to that point. There are two major focus of the course... functions and trigonometry. Calculus uses the concept of the function a lot and students need to know how to recognize and manipulate functions. If a student has weak algebra and arithmetic skills, this part of the course will uncover those weakness. Because I know the typical problems and am terrific at teaching algebra and basic math skills, I know how to fix any problems that arise quickly. Trigonometry uses new functions (sine, cosine, tangent) that require students to memorize nearly 100 new math facts associated with the dreaded "Unit Circle" (e.g., sin(30°) = ½). I teach an approach that reduces the number of facts needed to be memorized by 60-70% and helps students recall the facts they need fast. Another problem students face is teachers will expect students to measure angles in radians instead of degrees and many students find radians mysterious and scary. I teach the concept of the radian in 5-10 min and completely eliminate all the scariness. Taught wrong, pre-calculus is a tough course... taught right, it's not a bad course and it can even be an interesting experience. I'd love to help you with your pre-calculus course

While the test tests students. knowledge of the math that they learn in algebra II & precalculus, this test should NOT be approached the way you would in a classroom course. In addition to understanding the math concepts, it's important to always be mindful of working problems quickly and efficiently... you don't get extra points for solving them in the formal way... in fact you burn precious time. Unlike in the classroom, this is a test where you can and should use "tricks" and shortcuts when appropriate. I successfully completed my own differential equations course about five years ago. Since then, I was able to help a young man who was freaking out about how terribly hard his differential equations course was. At the beginning of the course, he told me he'd be grateful if he could eke out a "low-B." Thanks to my help, he scored "A"s on the first 3 out of his four midterms and got a “B” on his last exam when the prof shifted into "overdrive" to “make up time” at the end of the course. Needless to say, that last exam was a disaster for all the class. Up to this point, most students main interaction with triangles has been using the Pythagorean Theorem (a^2 + b^2 = c^2) on right triangles and calculating areas (A = 1/2*b*h). The word "trigonometry" literally means "the measurement of triangles" and extends the study of triangles to focus on finding the lengths of missing sides of triangles or the size of the angles of triangles. Curiously, trigonometry also teaches how triangles and circles are closely related through the sine and cosine functions. Trigonometry is used extensively in calculus, physics and engineering and is even used in other course like chemistry and economics. Trig uses new functions (sine, cosine, tangent) that require students to memorize nearly 100 new math facts associated with the dreaded "Unit Circle" (e.g., sin(30°) = ½). I teach an approach that reduces the number of facts needed to be memorized by 60-70% and helps students recall the facts they need fast. And, the way I teach the basic trig facts makes the inverse functions (e.g., arcsine / sin^(-1)) MUCH easier to calculate WITHOUT a calculator. Another problem students face is teachers will expect students to measure angles in radians instead of degrees and many students find radians mysterious and scary. I teach the concept of the radian in 5-10 min and completely eliminate all the scariness. Graphing trig functions often gives students fits. I have unique ways of teaching graphing that make that task much easier as well. I started my teaching career by teaching mechanics as a US Air Force Academy instructor. Following my Air Force career, I earned a Calif HS physics teaching credential (which I still hold along with credentials in math & chemistry). I also studied how to teach physics at a program taught by Arizona State: the program, "Modeling Physics" is the only program judged "exemplary" by the Department of Education. I've taught &/or tutored physics since 1997.

While the test tests students. knowledge of the math that they learn in algebra II & precalculus, this test should NOT be approached the way you would in a classroom course. In addition to understanding the math concepts, it's important to always be mindful of working problems quickly and efficiently... you don't get extra points for solving them in the formal way... in fact you burn precious time. Unlike in the classroom, this is a test where you can and should use "tricks" and shortcuts when appropriate. Having taught both classroom math and SAT-ACT test prep, I know and teach both the tips & "tricks" as well as the underlying math theory. I'd love to help you with your SAT Math II test prep!

I'm a retired AF major and did well enough on my Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) to be awarded a full, four-year scholarship to Georgia Tech. Additionally, being an engineer, and a math and science educator I'm well equipped to help you prepare for those aspects of the test. Unlike most other aptitude tests like the SAT, ACT, etc., there are two spatial reasoning components in the AFOQT... I understand how these questions "work" and how to analyze them to find the correct answer. Grammar and vocabulary also parts of the test. I speak and write well, and have a plethora of synonyms and antonyms at my finger tips when I need just the right word... like "plethora" which means an "overflowing or super abundance". I also understand the subtleties of English usage. For example, it drives me up the wall when airline attendants tell me to remain seated for the *duration* of a flight after I've already gotten up to go the bathroom... Once I've gotten out of my seat even once on a flight, it's impossible for me to stay seated for the duration of the flight: the phrase they really want is "for the *remainder* of the flight" as *duration* means the entirety of the flight. Finally, there's a component that tests you on aviation concepts and terminology... having been in the Air Force for twenty years including a stint teaching at the Air Force Academy, I've learned a fair bit about aviation even though the only airplanes I've flown were ones where I was seated in the passenger cabin. Bottom line: the AFOQT is a not your run-of-the-mill aptitude test, and I have the skills, experience and teaching ability to help you prepare for your AFOQT.

I had to take a similar military entrance exam, the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test) and did well enough to qualify for a 4-year college scholarship. I helped a young man raise his ASVAB math score from a 29 to a 40 over the course of three weeks. Before, his score was so low the Navy wouldn't accept him: with his higher score, he was able to apply for his preferred job category.

My first accomplishment towards my California teaching credential back in 1997 was passing my CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test). At that point, I'd taken so many standardized tests and was so comfortable with the sample questions they provided that I went into my test with the goal of not just passing the CBEST, but *acing* it. Having taken and aced the CBEST on my first try, I'm certain that I can help others prepare for their CBEST.

Great, very patient, tutor!

John literally saved my precalculus grade (and my entire winter semester)! I decided to get a tutor close to my midterms because I was not grasping the content. He was very knowledgeable and explained the concepts simply and in a very straightforward manner. I wish all teachers taught that way! The concepts, which seemed very convoluted when discussed in class, made sense when John explained it during our sessions. I had many MANY questions, which he patiently answered. He made sure I truly understood and could apply the math concepts to test questions. Fantastic AFOQT Tutor

John is a superb tutor, providing multiple angles of approach to solve time-constrained mathematics questions. He is available when needed, and patient with learning abilities. He is skilled at teaching math concepts that stick and work when the test comes and you must recall methods to expeditiously solve factorials divided by factorials for example. As a retired USAF Officer, and AF Academy teacher, he is well suited to teach math, and why it is used as a measure of predictability for commissioning in the USAF. Every lesson is thorough, and I recommend meeting at least twice a week with John, once in the mid-point and once on the weekend, so your brain has time to learn, absorb, and apply each new technique.
