I have a legal background (J.D.) and recently completed a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Over the past several decades, I have tutored students aged 6 – 70 years old on a range of subjects including languages, math, reading, and English. I have worked with children in a variety of roles including as a camp counselor, private tutor, and Girl Scout troop leader, as well as volunteering in my child’s schools.
Presently, I direct a non-profit organization in the mornings, teaching professionals about a specific area of law. I also teach a weekly language class for second-grade students and tutor an adult ESL learner in English. I would be happy to help you or your child with your learning needs.
My style of teaching is to focus on the topics and interests of the student. To teach reading, for example, I might ask students to form letters out of playdough, pipe cleaners, or licorice. For adults, we might practice conversational English by analyzing songs, poetry, or recipes. I find that many learners appreciate tactile activities and games in addition to more traditional visual and auditory learning. I also understand the value of repetition, and I build on prior lessons for reinforcement.
Overall, I try to instill a sense of confidence and a love for learning in my students. I am a patient and understanding teacher, and I celebrate my students’ successes with them. I would be pleased to speak with you about your tutoring needs.
