Bio

I'm Merri! I graduated in 2014 from Western Governor's University with a BA in Special Education. I have experience with teaching a wide variety of learners, in-person and remotely. I have spent time in self-contained classrooms, in a virtual school with small groups and 1 on 1 instruction, and in general education classrooms with large groups. I understand IEPs and the laws and language surrounding IEPs, and I like to use a multisensory approach to target specific skills. I particularly enjoy working with neurodiverse learners.

As an adult with a late diagnosis of ADHD, as a parent of children with ADHD and autism, and as an experienced teacher, I bring a well-rounded perspective into my interactions with my students and their families. I understand what it feels like when you have the knowledge to complete an assignment, but no idea how to begin. I know what it feels like to lose track of time, and to lose track of what you're thinking about. I learned strategies to help me be successful in working around these obstacles, and I can teach them.

I know that each individual child has unique strengths and challenges, and I know that each child needs an approach to learning that allows them to build confidence in their strengths and their ability to work through difficulties. I can creatively work to solve problems and develop effective strategies that can allow your child to realize the potential they have. When I am working with a student, I gather information about learning styles, areas of concern, and academic needs through questions, observations, and assessments. I create a predictable, routine schedule for each session, and plan instruction based on what I learn. I can use materials that I have, I can design new materials, or I can teach using materials you prefer. I am flexible with scheduling, and I would love to answer any questions you have. Feel free to contact me, and I will respond as quickly as possible.

As an Exceptional Children's teacher, I am often required to teach all elementary subjects. In addition, I have completed placements lasting several months in 1st and 4th grade general education classrooms. I am Highly Qualified in Elementary Education and Special Education.
Homeschool,

Homeschool

I am currently homeschooling my middle school student, and teaching in a homeschool co=op. Homeschooling allows me to create a curriculum that addresses the needs of my child individually. I use strategies from many different schools of thought, and am always learning more. I use secular curriculum and am academically focused. I currently design my own Language Arts curriculum, and I use Art of Problem Solving for math and Real Science Odyssey for Science. I use a variety of sources for Social Studies and History.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have several years of experience in teaching students with ADHD, and I myself am an adult with ADHD. Individuals with ADHD can struggle with with many aspects of learning, such as staying focused, prioritizing sensory input, organizing time and materials, and completing work independently. Important strategies include visual supports, providing instruction with a multisensory approach, incorporating high interest subjects into lessons, allowing for physical movement, and keeping activities and assignments at a length appropriate for the individual student.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My route to teaching was non-traditional, in that I had many years of life experience after high school before earning my degree. One of my children was diagnosed with autism, and learning how to help him opened up a whole new world of learning. At least 80% of the students I have worked with in my teaching career have been diagnosed or were in the process of obtaining a diagnosis. I am very familiar with many strategies that are helpful in my teaching, including social stories, visual schedules, token boards, trial teaching, and behavior analysis. Working closely with families to identify plans to help students succeed is a particular strength of mine. I graduated in 2014 from Western Governor's University with a BA in Special Education.
