Hello! My name is Matthew, and I am a recent graduate from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and a minor in Computer Science. I am an experienced teacher and presenter, having been selected to represent the psychology department to incoming freshmen due to my ability to explain high level concepts to beginners. In addition to representing my department, I have also presented research at many conferences throughout my undergraduate career. Through my research position, I have also written on two peer reviewed scientific articles.
Outside of my research, I have also completed courses on phonetic development and the structure of English language. Using these skills, I taught formal academic English to an ESL student from Atlanta for four months, with him passing a college level English course by the end of our time together. I enjoy breaking down concepts in new ways to make them more understandable, and I believe that improving the skills and abilities of others is one of the most rewarding activities possible.
Starting in the fall, I will be attending George Mason for my Masters degree, as I am working to become a professor. Beyond my psychology and English coursework, I have several years experience in computer science and statistics, and have tutored several students through both topics. I find that every student has their own unique learning style, so I prefer to work with each person in the way that helps them most rather than trying to prescribe one universal tutoring method. I am, however, a huge proponent of whiteboards and letting mistakes happen so that they can be explained. I believe in explaining how to fix an issue, and will always try to give active feedback and course corrections as they make sense. Feel free to contact me with any questions, I always do my best to respond as soon as possible.
