Public Speaking

My education as a public speaker began in high school and college including training and practice in speech, drama and debate, participating in numerous debates and school plays including several plays still included in the current school repertory. I also played and acted in video and movie productions. As a professional my career included frequent demands to speak at conferences, business meetings, training sessions as well as before often very large crowds of clients, company marketing and sales executives at monthly or annual meetings. My speaking engagements were usually formal but not infrequently informal and impromptu. Besides speaking at various fora in the industry, I also prepared and presented frequent presentations in my capacity as a religious leader in my community, including regular weekly services to the community and as a leader of smaller study groups. Finally I've been teaching a variety of subjects, including English, speech, music and business for many years. My experience has included formal and informal public speaking in a wide range of formal and informal settings to audiences from 10 to more than 5000 persons here in the United States, in several European countries and in the Middle East. As a sideline to my regular duties as a VP of Planning, I was the regular speech writer for the President of ITT and several other company executives. I've studied speeches and techniques of the great speakers of the last two millenia, from Demosthenes and Cicero, Plato (Socrates)and Miletus to Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and up to John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Vocabulary

If you understand the vocabulary, you know the subject. Your ability to understand the vocabulary determines your test results. It delimits reading, comprehension, writing, and ability to interpret test questions and choose the correct answers. Building your vocabulary cannot be crammed into a couple of tutorials but there are techniques for building and expanding your vocabulary rapidly. English borrows as much as 60% of its vocabulary from Latin. Learning Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes can multiple your English vocabulary, and help you to decipher words newly seen. A few Greek roots help too. Since few today study Latin or Greek in High School or College, an English tutor grounded in the classics can help you expand your vocabulary rapidly, focusing on the roots and words used in the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, and other key tests.

I passed the CSET subsection three and four because of his thorough teaching. He was very prepared, and he gave me the appropriate tools to succeed. He knows the structure of the test. He explains the concepts clearly and concisely. He was one of the best teachers that I have ever encountered.

Wonderful Teacher

My 12 year old son really enjoys his lessons with Mr. K. He has been working with my son for over a year now. My son has been improving his writing skills and has written several short stories. Mr. K. is a very kind, talented and knowledgeable teacher. He suggests and encourages my son to read the classics. He has high standards for my son and checks the writing every week when they meet. I am very thankful we met him.

Great Tutor and Very Friendly

Mr. Douglas K. is a great tutor who is very helpful when it comes to English reading comprehension and writing. I've been working with him for the past two months now on SAT critical reading and my scores have improved a lot. My vocabulary has also improved thanks to the easy-to-remember definitions that he provides for me. He is also very friendly and knowledgeable in many academic fields. I would definitely recommend him as your tutor if you need help in English reading comprehension.

Excellent Tutor

Douglas has been tutoring my son and daughter for the SAT test since the beginning of this summer. What I have observed about his method is that he describes the original root for each word which helps greatly to understand and remember the vocabulary. I had been looking for a tutor to work with my teenagers on English and I believe Douglas is preparing them for both the test and the use of the language in general. The other great thing about him is that my kids are having fun while learning from him. Douglas has a pleasant personality and I'm delighted with him as a tutor.

Very Knowledgeable

Mr. K. is very knowledgeable. He knows a lot about history and current events. He also understands the different points of views on a certain subject. Mr. K. gives information about interesting topics like the Battle of Gettysburg. I have been taking his classes for the whole summer.

Douglas knows what it takes to get a GREAT college personal statement. I asked him to help me with revising my college admission essays for UC Berkeley, and I got in! All thanks to his expertise with English grammar and insight to what colleges want when it comes to personal statements.

Positive Results So Far

My child has been taking Latin lessons from Douglas for about a year. Since Latin was not offered at my child's school, my child started from scratch, and Douglas has been a very patient tutor. He is very knowledgeable on the subject. Learning Latin has helped my child a lot on English and Science as well. I have seen positive results so far. We would continue with the Latin lessons.

Very insightful.

My son has been taking lessons with Douglas for about a year and he has grown much more confident in English. Douglas is very insightful and helpful, particularly with writing. He has helped my son improve in his essays and has also helped with SAT prep. I would recommend Douglas as a tutor to any parent whose child is struggling in his English class or needs help on SAT English.

Excellent Tutor!

Mr. K has been a profound tutor for my daughter for the past couple of weeks! I had been searching vigorously for a tutor who would provide excellent reading and writing tips. Not only did Mr. K fit all of these criteria, but he makes the class interesting with his wide range of knowledge which my daughter really enjoys! All in all, Mr. Douglas K is one of the best tutors I have encountered! I would definitely recommend him!
