I have over 5 years of teaching/tutoring experience and 10 years working with youth of all ages. Isn't it time you give your kids a tutor that can not only teach the material, but also make learning a pleasant experience? Truth is most children like learning, when we are young we consider a trip to the zoo or museum an exciting adventure. When a child faces obstacles to their learning, it stops being fun. Once those obstacles are removed learning becomes exciting again. When youth are able to perfect new skills it boosts their self-esteem and leads to future success. In order to get there youth need a safe comfortable environment in which to learn without judgment.

When it comes to math I teach not only how to get the right answers, but also why the answer is right and how to check their work so they know come test day if they've made any small errors. I work not only with them at their current level, but also strengthen their core math skills (addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication) so they can predict answers before entering them into their calculators and have the skills to solve problems they haven't encountered before.

Nobody likes to feel behind in their English. I match age appropriate materials with students' skill level. When working with essay writing I focus first on giving the child the skills to express their concepts in an organized fashion and then work on improving their grammar and spelling. Unlike other tutors I don't promise "instant" improvement. Why? It's very hard to suddenly be expected to know hundreds of new rules. The exception to this is of course college applications. There I take several sessions to draft and edit an essay. Why? This is a reflection of the applicant not his/her tutor. Colleges and universities look for the applicants personality to shine through and if I pushed a teenager through the process, it would look like a strange hybrid of personalities shining through.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I've worked with many children who have ADD or ADHD, both on and off medication. I adapt my lessons by having shorter lessons with them on a more frequent basis. In the lessons I break down concepts into smaller chunks and will move on to a new subject quicker. In order to assure they have understood the lesson I will do a quick review of the concept the next lesson. I also am constantly either guiding them through the steps or having them guide me through the steps as the constant verbalization keeps them on track and lets me know quicker when their brain has wandered. In addition to the subject at hand I always spend a few extra minutes on organization with my ADD/ADHD students.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I used to be a classroom assistant in a special needs classroom. There I worked with students on reading comprehension and mathematics. I have also tutored private students with dyslexia. When working with students with dyslexia I use a variety of approaches. I have a strong background in multi-sensory teaching, and call on that to develop lessons that make the materials accessible and interesting to my pupils. I also do a lot of co-reading during my lessons, giving students a vital link between the written word and the spoken word.
