REAL TEACHER, 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
CURRENT IVY DOCTORAL STUDENT

I am an INFJ and love my students as humans, so I am conceptual, thorough, dedicated, and engaging, and I work to see that my students fly without my help as soon as possible. I am kind and patient and have multiple strategies for success based on the student's profile.

EXPERIENCE:

SCHOOL TEACHING = Since 2008. I obtained a K6 teaching credential in California and have taught the following grades, locally and internationally: 1-4 & 6 (all subjects), and 8-11 (English, math). I have lectured undergraduate (English, math) and graduate students (research, critical thinking) at the University of California.

TEST PREP = Since 2000. After practically acing my SAT, I taught test prep (GRE, GMAT, MCAT Writing) at Kaplan. I have also taught using multiple texts since then and developed my own combined approach. Some students who were earning 1200s had 300-point jumps and went to the top 3 schools in the nation.

SIDE JOB AS TUTOR = Since 1999. I taught calculus at the public library to fulfill my 250 service hours for the International Baccalaureate. Since then, tutoring (all subjects less than 8th grade, specialty in 2nd language learners, test prep, logic, writing) has been alongside my formal education job. I prefer online teaching for its flexibility, but I can also come over (within 15 mile radius) or offer you an amazing place in my compound's clubhouse.

REGULAR JOB WHEN I HAD THE TIME = I have held positions in teaching and education management and am now pursuing my doctorate in education at a prestigious school while I care for my dependents.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have been a public speaker since my youth. In high school, I won the best public speaker award by the Lions Club. I have also participated in Model United Nations for 12 years, from high school to graduate school, and initiated its first class both in my college and in the school I later taught at. At the school, I taught public speaking to my high school students so that they could be effective in the debate. For grad students, I teach public speaking in the context of presentations. Technical details of public speaking, such as demeanor, intonation, pauses, and repetition are important. Remember that you have a specific audience and space you are managing, and that you have to start off right within the first minute and use proper language. I can also provide you commentary on the substance, such as how it flows, what evidence you presented, what a counterargument can look like, and what you can do in preparation to improve your speaking. I will also target your emotions and expectations, which play a huge role. With practice, this becomes natural, so you won't need a coach soon.

Arabic

I learned to speak Arabic at home before learning English and have formalized my Arabic education both in weekend school and during childhood summers abroad. I have lived in an Arabic-speaking country for 8 years as an adult and traveled around the Middle East throughout that time. Since I am fully bicultural, I have access to literature, songs, and TV subscriptions that can instantly help others with conversational Arabic and cultural immersion.

Logic,

Logic

I have taught logic and critical thinking at the University of California. The courses cover topics such as logical fallacies, argument rebuttal, and research design. I have also taught the logical stream of thought in the GMAT, which is really useful for overthinkers as it is for those who are overwhelmed by the section. It really just takes some mind-wiring with good examples to practice spatial reasoning if it doesn't come to you naturally. I think people can be intimidated by it if they don't see how it can be learned, when it can be.

CBEST,

CBEST

I passed the CBEST (as well as the CSET and RICA) with flying colors the first time around without studying. When I looked at the study manuals later, however, I found that they don't teach the strategy of passing if you get surprised with a factual question or a confusing pair of answers to choose from. I can really help with creating that solving strategy and making the educated guess that gets you there, and I am currently helping one of my friends do that.
