Teaching ESL to adult learners has been my joy and privilege for many years. I am able to refine and improve their speaking/listening and reading/writing skills. I have worked both as a private tutor and as an instructor in college and university ESL programs. Locally, I had 18 years experience as an instructor in the English Language Institute at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs and have taught ESL classes to employees at Memorial Hospital and in many other local companies.

I have a "survival" knowledge of Spanish and French and a more functional knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. I am an excellent language teacher because I know what it's like to work in or study another language. I understand the linguistic process and, therefore, I am very good at helping my adult clients and students navigate the idiosyncrasies of the English language. My students say I am an excellent Grammar and Pronunciation teacher because I explain things very clearly and am always looking for new ways to creatively help them navigate English.

Although I have a tutoring studio set up in my home, I also tutor via Skype if my student has a dependable internet connection.

I specialize in teaching English for Special Purposes: aviation, nursing, workplace, restaurant, hotel, workplace presentations, etc.

I would be happy to discuss your language needs and work with you to achieve your language goals.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's degree in "Bilingual and Multi-Cultural Education". I have taught ESL for many years to adult learners from many different countries. Until recently, I was an instructor in the English Language Institute at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs. I have taught Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. My specialties are Grammar and Pronunciation. I have also taught cross-cultural communication classes at a local hospital and workplace English at other companies in the Pikes Peak region. I have published a book of handouts for adult ESL learners that help explain some of the peculiarities of the English language. I also recently published a book about my teaching trips to China. I am a passionate and well-qualified instructor of English as a Second Language.
Grammar,

Grammar

I taught Advanced Grammar in the English Language Institute at Pikes Peak Community College for many years. I also taught Basic and Intermediate Grammar. I recently developed curriculum for "ESL for the Workplace," which includes a grammar component. My colleagues affectionately called me the "Grammar Queen". I also recently published a book of ESL handouts that I used with my ESL grammar students over the many years I taught in colleges and universities. I still use those handouts with students I currently tutor.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Having proofread student's papers for 45 years, I have developed a critical eye for finding typographical, punctuation, spelling, and grammar errors. I am also skilled at helping students or other clients write for the specific audience for which the paper is intended: class assignment, research project, conference submission, oral presentation, magazine/journal article, etc. Additionally, I am familiar with MLA and APA formats and ensure that my students or clients comply with those particular format requirements. Furthermore, particularly with clients/students whose first language is not English, I confer with them about anything I don't understand such as the stated topic or phraseology/ jargon/ terminology being used. That way, I can help them clarify meaning or make sure that I'm not correcting/changing anything in error. I do not proceed in making any suggested corrections until I first understand the intent of the writer. I recently did a 120-page proofreading project for the Mechanical Engineering Department of a prestigious university in Beijing. They were quite pleased with my results and even offered me a teaching position. I believe that anyone hiring me for a proofreading project would be very pleased with my results as well.

TOEFL,

TOEFL

I have tutored several students in TOEFL preparation. Primarily, I expose them to the iBT TOEFL by using practice tests in the book and online. We discuss and practice strategies for speaking and writing. I guide my students systematically through the preparation by using the ETS TOEFL book as well as practice TOEFL exercises on YouTube. Additionally, I have created a list of what I call TOEFL Signal words that introduce students to important words in English they should be able to use in answering questions and be able to recognize and understand while reading. This seems to be a big help in building a student's confidence. I recently helped a student increase her previous TOEFL score by 20 points.

Writing

I have a lot of experience in helping my clients and students with their writing and compositions. As an instructor in the English Language Institute at Pikes Peak Community College, I have taught Beginning Grammar/Writing, Intermediate Grammar/Composition, and Advanced Grammar/Composition. In all these classes, I am revising and correcting my students' grammar, punctuation, paragraph/composition organization. I know I can help you.
