I have taught, tutored and formed relationships with students from Kindergarten to 8th grade for the past 10 years. Creating relationships helps provide a foundation for teaching. I have been trained in developmental reading stages and have worked closely with teachers and speech language pathologist to provide individualized instruction.
I have completed course work in Orton-Gillingham (OG) Reading Strategies. OG strategies provide a structure to teach phonics instruction that integrates multi-sensory methods. It promotes success in reading, so students are motivated & excites to continue to learn.
I have ten years of Special Education experience in brick and mortar schools, 5 years of this as a Special Education Teacher at a K-8 school. I have worked with students from kinder to 8th with mild/moderate disabilities ranging in a variety of types of Learning Disabilities (Reading, Writing, and Math) and students who struggle in reading and math but have not been identified as needing special education services.
I believe spelling needs to be provided through direct instruction, not memorization only. I have been trained in specific strategies to break apart sounds, blend them together, connect them to its written form and understand the rules that help guide spelling. In addition to phonically sound words (sound out words that follow rules), I work on words that do not follow the normal rule patterns in English.
