I hold a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University. I have a lot of teaching experience, from lecturing in 300 student classes to one-on-one tutoring. I've taught children with reading problems in Holt Michigan, and taught English as a second language to children in Hong Kong, where I also worked as a private tutor. I have taught archaeology and anthropology classes at Columbia University in New York City and at Community College in Baltimore. In sum, I have taught a variety of subjects to different age groups and at different educational levels.

Strong test scores contributed to my acceptance to the PhD program at Columbia, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and insights with students who have ambitious goals for their future. Personally, I am a friendly family man with a young son.

I have experience tutoring High School and College-age students. Based largely on my SAT and ACT scores, I was a National Merit Semifinalist in High School, and received a scholarship to Albion College.

I am a published author, with two articles printed in scholarly journals in 2015. I have completed a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University, an Ivy League institution. I scored in the 99th percentile for the Verbal section of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and received the highest possible score on the Analytic writing section. I have extensive experience working with university students.

Super Knowledgeable, Organized

My son has a packed schedule, with a full load during the day and an extra class online--history. We used him after the first month of school when it was clear he was falling behind and that the material was very challenging. John answered our request for help with prompt understanding of what was needed to catch up, all the while making it meaningful and relative to today's current events. John has gone beyond our expectations by bringing books of his own as resources if the curriculum is lacking adequate explanation. He packs a lot into a lesson, still keeping the content manageable. He is such a wealth of knowledge that as a parent, I'm drawn to his lessons and explanations and finding myself saying, "I never knew that." Organized and punctual are easy descriptors for him. We couldn't have asked for a better history tutor.

Brilliant writing coach. Knowledgeable, patient, and a lot of fun to work with.

John helped me develop the high-level writing and research skills necessary to finish my master’s thesis. I have adult ADHD, and writing has NEVER been easy for me. However, John helped me systematically break through a lot of the writing barriers faced by those with ADHD. Also, during our sessions, John taught me how to research and think at a much higher and more engaging level than I ever had before. Beyond all that, John is a brilliant teacher who is knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects, and a lot of fun to work with. I seriously wish I found him years ago.

Extremely productive session

My lesson with John was fantastic. He very clearly presented and explained concepts I was struggling with in philosophy and he helped me significantly strengthen the work in my assignment. We finished everything I wanted to go over and were even able to do a more in-depth analysis of it because we had time left over, which I did not expect since I did not think I would be able to understand the concept that quickly and easily, but John made it happen!

Amazing Writing Coach

John is the epitome of effective feedback and coaching. I was insecure about my writing techniques and John was able to teach an easy formula to apply to my writing and think outside of the box. There is no fluff when it comes to his coaching he gives you the feedback you need to succeed.
