Bio

I've been teaching since I was 14 years old - first as a waterfront counselor at a Boy Scout camp, then tutoring my high-school peers in mathematics, and later as a teaching assistant in mathematics at Michigan State University. I taught math and science for two years at a public high school (grades 8 - 12) in Australia and I also taught for two years in the Electrical Engineering Department at Tennessee State University. I've been teaching since I was 14 years old - first as a waterfront counselor at a Boy Scout camp, then tutoring my high-school peers in mathematics, and later as a teaching assistant in mathematics at Michigan State University. I taught math and science for two years at a public high school (grades 8 - 12) in Australia and I also taught for two years in the Electrical Engineering Department at Tennessee State University. Most recently I have served as an adjunct faculty member in the math department at Rutgers University where I taught Calculus 1 and 2 from 2018 through 2021.

When I work with students who need help with math I first focus on listening closely to diagnose where the blockers are. I break down complex math tasks to individual skills, zeroing in on those blockers and helping the student to remove them. With the blockers understood and addressed we can then build up the remaining skills to get back to the complex task that the student needs to master. I review school work and give targeted diagnostic exercises to assess the student's skill level and also to determine the student's learning style and study practices. I also look at scheduling considerations and upcoming key events such as tests in order to set up a plan that makes sense in the context of the student's school environment.

I offer a unique combination of training and experience. I have a BS and MS in math with an undergraduate minor in secondary education. I hold a New Jersey teaching certificate for secondary school mathematics. I have worked for two years as a full-time high school math teacher, six years as a university faculty member in electrical engineering and math, and have had a long career in engineering including applications of mathematics in solving real-world problems.
