I was a sixth grade teacher in the Upper Perkiomen School District for 35 years. I am able to tutor students successfully in all subject areas. I observe student needs and weaknesses and tailor my instruction to improve study skills and subject area knowledge. I have improved student standardized testing results in reading and math. I love working with the older elementary level students. When necessary, I will contact classroom teachers so that my instruction will help the student in their classroom situation.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

I am a retired sixth grade teacher of 35 years in the Upper Perkiomen School District. I believe that handwriting is an essential skill for children of any age. A child's ability to write affects a child's sight word recognition, literacy, creative writing, note taking skills, and subject comprehension. Legible handwriting affects school achievement and student self-esteem. I am able to improve a child's manual or cursive handwriting which will accelerate overall learning.
Phonics,

Phonics

I am a retired sixth grade teacher of 35 years. I taught sixth grade reading and, after school, tutored 5th graders in reading in order to improve their state test scores. Phonics is an important part of reading instruction. Knowing the sounds of letters, enable students to decode words as they read and write sentences. Phonics allows reading and spelling to be smooth and automatic. I teach phonics as the first step in reading instruction. Strong word recognition skills enable me to broaden my reading instruction to include reading fluency, vocabulary development, and text comprehension.

I am a retired sixth grade teacher. After 35 years of teaching with the Upper Perkiomen School District, in Pennsburg, PA, I have learned that study skills are the most important skill for student success. Parent and teacher conferences helped me understand the needs of my students. My experience has taught me that a clean locker, well organized notebook and bookbag, a detailed assignment book, a daily studying pattern, and specific study strategies for each subject, will enable a student to succeed.

Social Studies

I am a retired sixth grade teacher of 35 years. For each of my 35 years, I taught three classes of social studies instruction. I was often involved in the district level development of curriculum. I have experienced the teaching of and researching of a variety of social and political issues that affected my students, our country , and the world at large. Today, I emphasize the importance of the history, geography, politics, and the economics of any social issue. I believe that a general knowledge of social studies will increase a student's social awareness and will encourage their own social development.

Sewing

I have a sewing machine and have been sewing since I was 12 years old. I grew up in Lancaster County, where sewing was a necessary female skill. I am able to sew clothes or home textiles by following a pattern. I am also able to sew curtains, table coverings, and assorted home textiles by doing measurements or by creating my own pattern. I enjoy sewing and, with my teaching experience, would be able to teach and demonstrate the skills needed to complete a sewing project.

Passionate tutor

Due to the pandemic , my daughter missed the spring semester due to school closing in 2020. This set her back however Julia has the knowledge to move her foward.

Great energy for grade school

Julia is very upbeat and positive, and great energy for working with my third grade daughter. This is a great asset in addition to her many years of teaching experience!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Julia is such a great tutor. She is working with my grand daughter to reinforce reading skills. She immediately was able to evaluate my grand daughter's strengths and weaknesses and individualize instruction to meet her needs. And just as important, my grand daughter loves working with her. She excitedly looks forward to Julia's sessions.

Enthusiastic and Engaging!

She focused on trying to figure out how my son learned first, which is a vital first step in teaching someone. She has a lot of enthusiasm and truly seems to enjoy teaching! I can't wait to see the progress my son will make this summer with Julia as his tutor!

She took the stress of organizing my child away from me

I am truly please from the visit meeting how well she connected with my child and got her to understand the importance of getting better organized. She struggled with homework and meeting the due dates. I am looking forward to the growth and improvements for my daughter. She is great with me 15 year old high school student. My daughter likes working with her too.

Excellent step by step for my 11 year old!!

Great lesson! The first week was a walk through of the fabric store at which time my daughter got to pick out her pattern, fabric, and supplies! Julie taught her how to read the pattern to know how much fabric was required for each project! The second week my daughter learned how to read and cut out the pattern and then learned how to pin and cut the fabric for her project!

Great sewing tutor!

Julie is a wonderful tutor. We went through the entire process for me to learn to sew, from knowing what pattern and fabric to buy to completing the project. I was completely clueless and now feel quite confident in my learned skills. Julie was fun, patient, and worked at a great pace for me to keep up.

Great Reading Tutor

Julia has helped my son make a great deal of progress in first grade reading! She is patient and has used additional strategies not tried by the elementary school. I would highly recommend her.

Wow!

My son continues to make extraordinary progress in school with Julia's help. My son has just been accepted to a prestigious prep school and I believe it was through the help of Julie that he tested well and did well on his essay. I can't thank her enough!
