I have taught math (from introductory algebra to calculus I) and physics courses (from conceptual physics to calculus-based physics with labs) for more than 10 years at community colleges. I have also taught physical science at Belmont Abbey College. I have worked as a private tutor and a tutor at Gaston College and I also have experience as a substitute teacher in public school. Often the key to helping a student is careful attention to details that reveal what misconceptions are impeding the student's understanding.

I believe all students can benefit from an understanding of physics taught at an appropriate level. Since mathematics is the language of physics, an understanding of mathematics is crucial to the process and may limit success in physics.

I completed a bachelor's degree in applied math/physics with a double major in chemistry. I earned my M.S. degree in applied physics doing experimentation (optics, electronics, & programming) related to measuring air turbulence with a laser. I completed course work and the research required for a PhD in physics. My research at UNC-Charlotte included construction and use of near-field scanning optical microscopes and automated spectral measurements and analysis of photoluminescence from porous silicon. I also worked a few years at a company developing equipment for creating computer generated holograms. Other work includes electronics repair and automation system installation.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have more than 10 years of teaching experience at the community college level. I believe it is important to help students make the connection between what they already know and the new concepts they seek to master. I enjoy helping students recognize the usefulness of mathematics and how the different things they learn reinforce one another.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

With more than 10 years of teaching experience at the community college level, I believe teachers need to help students make the connection between what they already know and the new concepts they seek to master. I enjoy helping students recognize the usefulness of mathematics in daily life.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have taught calculus at the community college level. I have also tutored high school and college students in calculus. Mastery of the algebra and trigonometry in precalculus is essential to prepare for calculus. I enjoy helping students recognize how useful math is in solving all types of problems.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

My second major in college was chemistry. In addition to general chemistry, I took Organic I, Inorganic, Analytic, and Physical Chemistry I & II. My senior lab project involved constructing and interfacing hardware to automate titration. I have tutored a number of students in chemistry. I tutored chemistry (as well as physics and mathematics) part-time at Gaston College for three years.
Geometry,

Geometry

More than 10 years of teaching experience at the community college level has taught me how important it is to help students make the connection between what they already know and the new concepts they seek to master. I enjoy helping students recognize the usefulness of geometry in so many practical applications.
Physics,

Physics

I have completed undergraduate and graduate level course work required to obtain a Ph.D. in Physics. I have more than 10 years of teaching experience at the community college level plus supervising students in labs and tutoring. I believe it is important to help students make the connection between what they already know and the principles of physics. The beauty of physics and mathematics is that problems can be worked in more than one way, but the same answer will result.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have addressed many common misconceptions students have when teaching introductory algebra and when tutoring. I believe it is important to help students make the connection between what they already know and the new concepts they seek to master. SAT Math

I have a strong background in the math required for the SAT (and beyond). Often it is possible to solve the problems without many time consuming calculations if you apply basic mathematical principles. I have experience teaching math at the community college from the lowest algebra through calculus. I scored above 700 on the Math Section when I took the SAT.

Trigonometry

I have taught trigonometry at the community college level. Since it is no longer a prerequisite of physics, I found it helpful to teach the essentials of trigonometry at the beginning of most physics classes. Trigonometry is easier when a student realizes how much of it comes from applying the Pythagorean Theorem. I enjoy helping students recognize how useful trigonometry is in applications from art to construction to science.

Thankful for Todd!

My child was struggling with mathIII this year. He really helped to improve her grade and is now helping with SAT review in math. Very thankful we were able to get him as her tutor!

Helpful and knowledgeable Tutor

He went over the subjects that I didn't know and helped me understand them. He was very patient, polite and kind. He helped me understand the concepts. It would help if included examples that I could find on a test about the subject. He did send me a message with a link to a website that would further my studies.

Excellent Tutor. Highly Recommended!

Todd has been a huge help with a math course I wasn't sure I could tackle on my own. He is extremely knowledgeable, eager to teach, and wasn't judgmental when I didn't know some more basic aspects of my subject.
