Hi, I'm Shane! I graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics from Rutgers University. I am currently pursuing a PhD at Rutgers University as well. I have been tutoring calculus and physics since high school and have started tutoring engineering subjects such as statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, MATLAB and thermodynamics as I completed these courses during my undergraduate degree. I also have experience as a supplementary instructor in a lecture/classroom style environment for various math courses. In addition to these courses, I have experience tutoring multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra as well both online and in person.

My fascination with these subjects drove me to do research with a grant from the NASA Space Grant Consortium propelling me into writing a thesis my senior year and extending it as my Master's thesis. I feel that the main downfall many students share throughout math and engineering/physics courses is that they are taught to robotically memorize formulas and problem solving methods without actually understanding the inner mechanisms of why these things work. This was commonplace in college classes with hundreds of students and a book's worth of entirely new material being crammed into a single semester. Not every textbook, professor, or teaching method works for every student. This is why I believe that one-on-one interaction that may not always be available in these college course settings is indispensable. I am passionate about tutoring for being able to see the transition from feelings of frustration and inadequacy in a student to full understanding and an eventual level of fascination and love of the subject that I have.

Finite Math

I have experience in advanced math subject areas including basic proof writing, complex analysis, the calculus of variations, Einstein/index notation, and perturbation methods. I graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics from Rutgers University.

Mechanical Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering

I thoroughly enjoyed many of the classes in the engineering undergraduate curriculum, having immediately started tutoring for them after finishing the courses. Statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, control systems, among others I have experience with. I also have experience in advanced fluid mechanics involving the derivation and analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations and exact solutions to them. I am also familiar with exact solutions to the heat equation in transient and steady-state conduction boundary value problems in different coordinate systems. I am currently pursuing a PhD in computational fluid dynamics.

Clarinet

Clarinet

I started playing clarinet in 4th grade and have continued through high school and college. Despite not being a music major, I have successfully auditioned for the Rutgers Wind Ensemble during my undergraduate, playing alongside performance majors and doctoral candidates. I have experience in preparing audition pieces and sight reading since middle school. I have played in various wind bands throughout high school and college as well as in pit orchestras for musicals. I have experience with Bb clarinet, bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, and contrabass clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone, however clarinet is my main instrument.

Expert on Statics

Shane walked my son through several problems in Statics. Shane patiently explained how to solve each problem. He was very clear in his explanations and he answered my son's questions. I feel very confident in Shane as a tutor for my son on his important subject.

Knowledgeable and very patient tutor!

Shane has a way to make the student interested in the subject, from the first session. My son has started taking lessons with him, very grateful to have found him.

Nancy , 9 lessons with Shane

Knowledgable

He did a great job explaining fluid mechanics and was able to help me with my homework. It was also great that he was able to show me a few things in MATLAB that were related to fluid mechanics.

Bryce, 3 lessons with Shane

Dropped into the material cold but digested the problems quickly

Obviously knowledgeable. Was well versed and had several approaches to all the problems we discussed. Left the session feeling like I understood all the material better.

Ryan, 3 lessons with Shane

Knowledgeable and easy to follow

We went over slope fields and integrating factors for my differential equations class. He was really helpful in reinforcing the concepts that I learned. I definitely recommend his services!
