Bio

I have tutored in various math subjects for 20 years now. I believe that anyone can learn this stuff; they just need to be taught correctly. I am also a former graduate teacher assistant for several undergraduate courses, where I led problem-solving sessions and interacted one-on-one with students of various learning styles. I specialize in "breaking down" concepts to make problem solving as simple and straight-to-the-point as possible. One of the main things that students notice about me is...

One of the main things that students notice about me is my passion for math. I always tell my students that it's OK if they don't like math, because I like it enough for the both of us! My job is to help all my students succeed, no matter what!

I have studied and practiced mathematics for my entire life. I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and a master's degree in Applied Mathematics. Therefore, I have a very deep understanding of the subject matter, and can explain concepts in as many ways as necessary to help new students understand better. I can help with the use of different technologies, including TI-83, TI-84, Excel, and R, just to name a few.

GRE,

GRE

I specialize in the Quantitative Reasoning sections of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). I am able to help test takers understand how to think and reason through problems to find solutions. Math questions on the GRE are usually not "direct" questions as a student would encounter in a math class. GRE questions require deeper understanding of the concepts, not just straight applications of formulas. That is how I am able to help, by giving test takers a "deep dive" into what type of thinking will be required of them on test day.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

Getting used to using Microsoft Excel can be hard for students to understand. I know, because it was hard for me as a new student too. Fortunately, I have spent over 20 years working on perfecting my abilities to communicate high-level concepts in a way that students of all levels can understand. If you need to use Excel for statistical calculations or data analysis, message me. I have helped many students before; I can help you too!

Computer

Data Science,

Data Science

Building a strong foundation of conceptual understanding in data science can be hard for students. I know, because it was hard for me as a new student too. Fortunately, I have spent over 20 years working on perfecting my abilities to communicate high-level concepts in a way that students of all levels can understand. Feel free to message me to ask about tutoring for data science concepts, projects, programming, error debugging, etc.
MATLAB,

MATLAB

I have tutored undergraduate and graduate students (mostly graduate students) in MATLAB programming since 2017. As a master's in applied mathematics degree earner, I am prepared to meet students at their current level of understanding and build their skills and confidence from there. I can help with MATLAB coding involving concepts in mathematical modeling, linear algebra, calculus, statistics, data analysis, and so much more. Feel free to message me and ask!

R,

R

I took several statistics courses in graduate school that required use of RStudio functions to analyze data sets. I am familiar with the process of reading online documentation of RStudio functions to find out how to get those functions to execute exactly what is needed for a given problem set or assignment. I also used RStudio extensively in my graduate research project; therefore, I feel confident in my abilities to help most students with their RStudio coding work.
SPSS

SPSS

Statistical concepts and analyses can be hard for students to understand. I know, because it was hard for me as a new student too. Fortunately, I have spent over 20 years working on perfecting my abilities to communicate high-level concepts in a way that students of all levels can understand. If you are using SPSS for research and analysis, especially if your major is in the health sciences, social sciences, or criminal justice, then I am ready and willing to help you obtain SPSS output and understand how to explain the output in homework assignments, projects, and research papers. Feel free to message me; I respond quickly!

Highly Knowledgeable and Communicative

After struggling to find a knowledgeable tutor to help me with my graduate level biostatistics online course, I was very pleased to work with Derrick. I had previously worked with 2 different tutors (they had PhDs) but was still struggling. Derrick is highly knowledgeable of the topic and working with him helped me get a great grade in the class. I wish I had worked with him earlier. Taking a course online can be difficult but having someone like Derrick to help, was invaluable. I highly recommend him and look forward to work with him again.

Extremely Patient, Knowledgable, and Concise!

I had Derrick as tutor for my Psychology Statistics class and he was extremely helpful. Being more of a humanities person, I really struggle to study math on my own and I had to take this class asynchronously. He was very responsive and easy to schedule with, and during our lessons, he broke down all the concepts to be very digestible - giving me definitions for everything as we worked through the problems and solved them. I feel much more confident in the class after just a few lessons and understand the content much better so I am now more easily able to study on my own and reference the notes I took during our lessons. He was also very patient and never made me feel bad for not knowing something, even if I felt like I was at a blank slate for certain concepts.

Great instructor

If you need help with SPSS, I know you will not be dissatisfied. I would use them again. Did a great job of explaining things.

Responsive and knowledgeable tutor

Derrick was great at explaining things clearly, and was very supportive throughout the learning process. He was also very prompt about answering emails and scheduling sessions. His dedication was a bonus to his competence.

Helped me with last minute notice

Fantastic help, walked me through each problem that I couldn’t understand, to help me prep for my exam that I had the same day. Was very patient with my limited knowledge, would recommend to anyone!

Great with R

Derrick has been helpful, professional, and consistent. These are all things I personally look for in a tutor and because of that I will continue to return as I maneuver through learning R for my research methods class.

A knowledgeable, patient & expert Stats "Sherpa"

The first session was excellent so I've signed up for more. Derrick B. has a very patient approach & explains statistical/ probability concepts in different ways until my mental blocks are overcome. I highly recommend working with this tutor.

Excellent

Awesome!!!!! The Best tutor! He explained, and had patience to go over things. I did not understand.. Darrik wanted to make sure I understood all of the concepts. I highly recommend him.!!

Very supportive and encouraging throughout tutoring session

In this tutoring session, Derrick helped me understand the fundamentals of figuring out how to solve basic coding errors. The main things I like about Derrick's tutoring is that he meets me on the level I am currently at and communicates well while walking through problem solving. Derrick has helped me gain confidence when working in R studio as well as influenced me to not get frustrated when errors occur
