I am a University of Kentucky and Vanderbilt University graduate with over 3000 total hours of tutoring experience over the past 15 years and I would love to help you conquer your math and economics fears! I have tutored students from 6th grade through adult learners returning to college. I absolutely love the one on one aspect of tutoring. Having taught Intermediate Microeconomics on two occasions at Vanderbilt, I found it difficult to engage every student as much as I would like to. In a tutoring session, you are my focus at all times.

I believe that examples are the key to a good tutoring session. In a tutoring session, I will typically make up an example problem which relates to the work done in class and work through it with you. If you have seen the concept before, I try to always guide you through the problem with questioning rather than answering. In this way, you work through the problem yourself and develop the necessary learning tools to succeed in the class, rather than simply receiving the answers from me. I always make an effort to try to come up with examples that are interesting or that relate to the real world in some way. I have been a teaching assistant for Sports Economics courses at Vanderbilt for over 3 years, so if you enjoy sports, I can usually come up with some way to connect a concept to a sports example. I think memorable examples are a good way to give you something to think back to when you are taking an exam.

If you are looking for someone who can make math or economics more relatable with a personalized approach, please contact me to schedule a tutoring session. I look forward to meeting with you.

GRE,

GRE

Standardized test preparation is all about gaining competency across a broad range of topics and being able to express that competency in a high pressure environment. The GRE is one of the highest levels of standardized tests, so the pressure is even higher. Tutoring for the GRE, I have worked with many current college students as well as adults with full time jobs who are wanting to change careers. My test prep tutoring style involves using a building blocks method over time using a plethora of practice problems. During each lesson, I will highlight one or two specific topics to focus on as homework for that lesson. After the lesson, I send the student some practice problems directed at those highlighted topics. I then ask the student to work through the practice problems and write down anything they think will help them solve similar problems on the exam. This material they've written down is called their memorization page and is built up over time to include all of the topics in the exam. In this way, the student has a succinct summary of content that they understand well to look through and review directly before the exam. This review sheet enables the student to build confidence right before the exam, because they can think back to all of the practice they have done for each subsection on their sheet.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra has always been one of my favorite subjects to do and teach. There are always so many different ways to find the value of an unknown variable and I love that all of them always come to the same conclusion. My students always tell me that I am very good at breaking down a complex problem into small steps, and the process of solving an algebra problem lends itself well to exactly this method. I look forward to helping you or your student with their algebra skills.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2 can sometimes take students by surprise as it ramps up the difficulty level above that of algebra 1. I focus on taking what students have already learned in algebra 1 and showing them that they are still applying the same concepts to this more difficult problem. I have always viewed trigonometry as a big puzzle. The puzzle pieces are things like the Pythagorean Theorem, the six trigonometric functions, SOH CAH TOA, and trigonometric identities. The difficult part of solving a problem in trigonometry is which puzzle piece to use at which time. I love working through the process of determining the proper puzzle piece and then putting it to use with students in order to solve complex trigonometric problems.

Incredible!!

Karen can handle anything you throw at her. She explains things 10x more clearly than my professor does, and is super flexible with my schedule. Cannot speak highly enough of her!

Best tutor

I always struggled to learn math- and Karen makes it so easy to understand. She breaks it down so simply and uses references I can actually grasp and remember. She doesn’t make me feel dumb for not knowing anything or asking questions on things I didn’t understand. 10000/10 recommend.

fantastic algebra two tutor

We have been working with Karen for a few months and have noticed a great academic and confidence improvement in our child. She explains lessons very thoroughly, helps our child retain the information much better than just a lesson in school, and we have been very pleased with the results so far!

AMAZING TUTOR

Two years ago I started researching for tutors for my son, who is in college. We were in desperate need of a micro economics tutor. My girlfriend had used Wyzant before for her children, so I decided to give it a shot. By the grace of God, we found Karen!!! My son clicked with her immediately. She described the concepts to him in a manner that he could understand as a freshman in college. She took her time and was very patient, in addition the video features that Wyzant provides are awesome!! After each session, your child could go back and watch what was recorded just in case they missed something. My son also used her for macro economics. He did phenomenal in both subjects and I 100% believe that if he didn’t have Karen he wouldn’t have done so well. Do not hesitate, Karen is a true professional and her skills to tutor our top-notch!!

Knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging tutor.

Karen has helped me tremendously in my university level microeconomics, macroeconomics, and business statistics courses this past year. Her tutoring approach consists of breaking down the concept, explaining it in a clear manner, and then providing additional examples to further your understanding. She is extremely patient and encouraging. Additionally, she is easy to reach through messaging, if you have a quick question. She has helped me accomplish my desired grades in all three courses, and I would highly recommend her.

My son has been working with Karen on a college level statistics class. He’s doing really well in the class so far and enjoying their sessions. It’s been a very positive experience and the class could have potentially been really challenging for him so we are extremely pleased.
