I have a BS degree in Aerospace Engineering, and practical work experience in mechanical systems, some electronics, some optics, and some chemistry. I am currently an organic farmer/gardener, a writer, and active in political processes. My background gives me insight into mathematics and a broad range of the sciences, as well as art, especially as related to various media of sculpting. Being the father of eight home-schooled children has given me the patience and insights required to help students grasp the nuances of needed knowledge of a given subject that may elude them due to any number of disparities. I have maintained a secret security clearance for over 40 years, which is still current, and is indicative of meeting requirements for a background clearance screening.

I lost my job as a test engineer in March 2013, due to the government's sequestration program, and have been unsuccessful at finding similar employment since then. It is for this reason that I am expanding my horizons with tutoring, to earn some extra money to stay off of the government dole system. I worked as the Santa Claus at Florence Mall for the last two Christmas seasons, which was quite an enjoyable experience. It included interfacing with "kids" of all ages, who wanted to have a short confidential session with Santa as a means to complete their holiday cheer. I have always enjoyed mentoring the younger people around me, whether at work, churches, or community gatherings. I have a strong sense of family, and although I have minimum of official tutoring experience as of this writing, I totally enjoy passing my accumulated knowledge to those with whom I have come into contact, assuming they have that interest also. I am a published writer of poems, a writer of short stories, and I have in the works a fictional children's book and a non-fiction commentary on present day Americana.

I designed and built my unique at-grade, minimum maintenance, solar-heated house, with 4200 square feet of living space, where I have lived for over 33 years. I have completed all of the art classes necessary to obtain a sculpture degree. I have obtained a BS degree in Aerospace Engineering, with structural design as the main field of expertise. I have designed and built multiple unique out-buildings on my property.
Art History

Art History

I have completed all of the necessary art-related coursework at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) to obtain a degree in sculpture. This includes art history classes both at UAH and at the University of Cincinnati, for classical and the more modern art venues. I have been awarded prizes at various shows for sculptures, silk-screening, painting, printing, mixed-media, and photography. Several of my works are in the permanent collection of the UAH art department.

I am a licensed preacher, but have never held a full-time time position as such, since I believe that the Bible teaches that a preacher should not be paid. I believe that the old and new testaments agree with each other and that they are both intended to be examples of how we should live our lives and treat each other. I believe that not only does the Bible agree with itself, but that it also agrees with scientific evidences, most theories (not evolution), and with what we can see in the world around us. I have never tutored Bible studies before, but I have taught church school to both children and adults. My family and I are charter members of the Answers in Genesis organization, and its Noah's Ark project, both of which enable people to better grasp the truths found in the Bible.

I am an effective tutor for Algebra I concepts. I have a broad background of math experience useful for helping students who may have missed out on some of the basic-level math skills that are required for understanding the more advanced math classes. Learning how to apply these concepts effectively is very important to students who need to advance into higher math skills, so selecting the proper tutor is consequentially important too.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

A significant portion of my tutoring experiences are for ACT math prep. As an Aerospace Engineer, using math and mentoring younger engineers in mathematical techniques was an essential part of my duties. Learning how and being able to handle crucial situations in a timely and correct manner is quite similar to the expected performance of test taking, so these preparation techniques are important for a tutor to pass on to students.

Trigonometry deals with shapes, angles, functions, and the interrelationship between them. Having developed the skills to apply these concepts properly through higher education and everyday engineering tasks, passing them on to students is an enjoyable undertaking as a tutor, who also understands the frustrations facing students who are unfamiliar with these concepts.

Best teacher

My son had a real hard time in math. With Mike he finally wanted to learn so much so that he wanted to stay longer each time. My son was eager to go back each time and for a child in 9th grade to finally find someone that could help him and feel good about himself is great. I highly recommend having Mike as the only one you pick for a teacher. He really should be the teacher of the year.

Great Tutor

Ben had his first session with Mike on Monday. Ben was very pleased with his session with Mike and told me that he has more confidence with his algebra/finance class now that he has someone that can explain the principles in a way he can understand clearly. Very much recommend Mike for a tutor.
