Bio

I love teaching young children and elementary students; I specialize in ESL, phonics, reading, English grammar, writing, math, and elementary subjects.

I hold a bachelor's degree and had taught my own five children math, reading, and writing before they entered public school. They all did exceptionally well. Later, I homeschooled them for several years and now the eldest three have either finished university education or are currently pursuing university studies.

Teaching is one of the things I enjoy most—to impart knowledge to the students and help them, guide them and eventually see them to be at their best is a most enjoyable and satisfying experience. I set for myself high standards and often raise the bars for my students whenever it is appropriate such that they also set a higher expectation for themselves.

I love working with young children; I love discovering their potential and see them blossom, learn and excel on their own as they take off on their own learning path.

I am bilingual, fluent in both English and Chinese. I had tutored an ESL student who was sent to me because the student's school teacher was concerned about his academic progress. He later succeeded in testing out of the ESL program and into regular stream. He even was admitted into a science and technology middle school for gifted students.

I teach out of the comfort of my home where many resources are available. Yet, I will be happy to travel to another location if it is more convenient to the student. I try to be flexible with time. I appreciate a 24-hour cancellation notice and I make up any lessons I have missed.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I am a native speaker of the Chinese language. My proficiency in both spoken and written Chinese is high. I am fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin. I successfully completed elementary education and secondary education till grade 10 in Hong Kong. During the years of my schooling, I received academic instruction in both Chinese and English, Chinese being the first language and English the secondary, which gives me equally substantial training on both Chinese and English. When I took the open public examination for secondary school placement, I scored the highest possible score in Chinese, followed by English, and math. I later moved to Canada and continued with my post-secondary education. I taught Chinese to Canadian born Chinese while I was in Canada. I taught my own children Chinese (spoken and written) when they were young. I also have tutored them Chinese when they took Mandarin Chinese at College level.

Later, I home-schooled them for several years and taught my children U.S. history, world history, general science, social studies, math, reading, and writing. Now the eldest three have either finished university education or are currently pursuing university studies. I tutored an ESL student first on English and math when he was five years old because he was falling behind in class. I subsequently tutored him on all subject areas. I tutored him on math, reading, writing, social studies, and science until he finished elementary school. With the tutoring, he continued to improve his grades and even was placed on principal's honor roll. He not only succeeded in testing out of the ESL program, but also was admitted to a science and technology school for gifted students. He now is doing very well at school and has received various awards.

I graduated from the University of Toronto, Canada, and hold a Bachelor's degree in music education (voice major). Piano is my secondary instrument. I have since taught piano to students in private and group settings. In teaching, I generally tend not to use only method books exclusively. I extract what is useful and appropriate for the student and move on to music materials from other albums or individual sheet music. I adapt the pace and specific approach of the lessons based on the maturity and interests of the student. Musicianship and music theory are always an integrated part of elements in teaching regardless of the instrument.

Motivational and talented tutor

We were fortunate to have found Edith as a voice therapy coach for my elderly mom. Edith's unique qualifications made these sessions truly exceptional. Her friendly, empathetic manner combined with her musicianship are a source of inspiration and joy for my mom, who is learning to breathe, relax, project, sing and listen with intention. Most wonderful still, Edith is completely fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, which allowed for an instant connection with my mom in her native language. They are practicing songs in English and Chinese. Edith is always calm, positive and supportive. We would heartily recommend Edith as a tutor to students of all ages, from school-age to retirees. Kudos to Wyzant for helping us find Edith on this platform!

Knowledgeable teacher

She seems very knowledgeable and calm with patient. She assessed my kid and gave very honest opinion about his strength and weakness . She seemed experienced teacher specially for young age kids.

Caring and patient instructor

During the pandemic lockdown, options for beginner piano lessons for our 6yo daughter were limited to virtual. Fortunately, our first Wyzant trial lesson was with Edith! Edith is always so patient with our daughter and focused on helping her make as much progress from week to week as possible. We also added voice lessons with Edith. I shared with her that my daughter had been struggling with phonics, specifically her Rs were sounding like Ws. Within four voice lessons, this was practically corrected. Edith is caring instructor for children, uses effective teaching methods, and I recommend her highly!

2nd Lesson

As my lessons move along Edith continues to be patient and suggest different techniques to help me correct my mistakes. I cannot over state how patient she is. I'm loving this experience.

February, 2 lessons with Edith

Very patient.

My first lesson was a great foundation for where I'm trying to go. It was slow enough for me to grasp what was presented and just enough for me to continue practicing to prepare for my next lesson.
