Hi,

My name is Charles. I’m a retired college professor. I am an economist and applied mathematician. I taught economics, finance, and applied math at the State University of New York (SUNY).

I’m also a part-time member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

I tutor all levels of math including, calculus, linear algebra, elementary school, junior high school, and high school math. I also tutor students in economics, as well as probability & statistics. Additionally, I’ve taught students taking the AP courses in calculus, statistics, and economics. I also tutor for the SAT, GRE, and GMAT. When I took the GRE exam I got perfect scores. The GRE is like the SAT on steroids. It’s used when applying to graduate school. When I took the SAT many years ago, I got nearly perfect scores.

My research and publishing has all been in the area of mathematical economics and finance. My work has also incorporated a great deal of material in the areas of philosophy, history, literature, physics, etc. Over the years I have developed a deep understanding of these areas.

Consequently, in my teaching of math and economics I have incorporated some material on the philosophy of math, philosophy of economics, philosophy of science, as well as the history of these disciplines. I have seen that this helps the students. They find out where the math comes from and how we got to this point in our understanding of the material. It makes learning math and economics less dry. It enriches the learning experience. And it makes tutoring sessions more interesting and more fun. But ultimately, the goal is to improve the student’s understanding of the material and to raise the student’s grade.

I have published several scholarly papers and two books. My understanding of the subject material comes from doing research and publishing, teaching at the university level, and handling some consulting assignments over the years.

I live in Huntington, New York. I used to live in St. James near Stony Brook University. I moved a few years ago to be closer to my frie

Elementary Math

Elementary math is important since it provides the fundamentals for all the math to come in higher grades. Students learn more when they also learn the history of the math and how it’s applied. Which are both areas I try to incorporate into my teaching.

Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is one of those subjects that is really interesting. When I first took calculus it opened the world up to areas I had never thought about. I learned more about the world from calculus than any other subject I ever took in school.
Geometry,

Geometry

I’ve tutored students in geometry for about 20 years. One of the biggest concerns of students taking geometry is learning the proofs. Since this is their introduction to proof writing. Fortunately, I am able to make proof writing fun and my students always master this part of geometry. Moreover, geometry should be the most fun for any student. Look around your room. Look at all the shapes and dimensions. Then think about area and volume. Geometry is a part of every life every day.

Very Patient and Understanding

Takes his time to teach in details and listens to you as well. Whenever I felt lost or confused, asked Professor K a question and he simplified the problem for me.

Great teacher - highly recommend

This is the second class Charles has tutored me for. He is very patient, clearly explains concepts, goes above and beyond to help, and I highly recommend him!

Very good tutor

I have tutored with Charles several times and each time he has been very good. Providing work to do before and after. For my latest session I had a test coming up and Charles and I hadn't reviewed the material yet I reached out to him two days before the test and he had time to go over the material with me for 3 hours to make sure I was good with the material.

Knowledgeable, easy to understand

Charlie was able to explain the concepts from class in very helpful and understanding way. He was also very flexible in his was of explaining concepts. Whenever I had trouble understanding a concept from his first, or sometimes even second, explanation, he always has another one to use until the concept clicked in my brain.

Very patient and helpful for all levels

Charles was very patient and helpful, even when I struggled and got flustered, he helped me have a better understanding of the material and sent me homework (with answers and equations) that I could practice on my own time. He helped me through my homework and made sure that I had a better understanding than when I started. Highly recommend.

The best professor/tutor for Statistics!

Charles is a devoted and exceptional statistics professor and tutor. He has gone out of his way to help me with my college course. He is flexible as to scheduling and is a great communicator. He is everything one could hope for in a tutor.

Raised Grade from low C to high B!

Charles’ tutoring helped me raise my grade from a low C to a high B. He was extremely helpful and made sure that I understood the class material. I felt very prepared for my exam and was able to raise my grade by almost 20 points!!! He is very patient and I highly recommend him!

Business Statistics Expert

Charles is basically teaching me the entire curriculum for this class. I have taken multiple sessions with him and will be taking a few more prior to my exam next week. He has been really helpful and explained the content so that I understand. The lectures for the class are not nearly as helpful and the homework has been useless so Charles has been a life saver.

Dedicated and Accommodating

Charles is flexible and willing to work with us and our busy schedule. He knows how to ask the right questions and push my child to think about his economics. Charles takes pride in having his students make 5's on the AP tests and it is evident in how he works with my son!

Knowledgeable, Professional and really cares if you learn.

I have used Charles for over a month, in preparation for the GRE General Exam. He is prepared, on-time, never cancels and know his Math quite well. Math is my weakest subject, but no matter how challenging an equation is, he always works it through with me so I can master it. He has been instrumental towards restoring my confidence in my highly limited knowledge of Math. And when I have a question over the Weekend in between sessions, he answered them promptly and accurately. He doesn't just tutor for the money, but actually cares that you learn. With Charles, you are absolutely 100% getting what you pay for.
