Ever since I can remember myself, I’ve loved books and stories. Growing up in the former Soviet Union, I remember having to walk a lot, and during this time, my father would tell me stories he’d make up. It may have been raining and cold, but I was so captivated by my father’s yarns, I was always disappointed to reach our destination. I think it was on these long, cold walks that my love of storytelling began.

Years later, after my family moved to America, I went on to study English literature and philosophy at CU Boulder and earn a Masters in Teaching degree from Boston College. Wishing to share my passion for literature with children, I taught middle school English classes in both private and public schools, but I discovered I enjoy working with students one-on-one most.

During the course of the past 9 years, I’ve tutored over 100 students, helping them find success. My friendly and warm personality makes my students feel comfortable and open to learning. Indeed, I’ve helped dyslexic students become confident writers, guided students of all levels to appreciate classical literature, and coached seniors in writing essays that granted them admissions to colleges of their choice.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Master's degree in education and have worked as a teacher and tutor for the past nine years. During this this time, I have taught sixth grade creative writing and book club electives where students discovered their joy for reading and for writing. I have also tutored elementary-aged students in reading, grammar, spelling, and writing. When tutoring, I have helped students decode words, visualize events in a story, construct sentences, and write descriptive paragraphs.

I help younger children decode words, visualize events in a story, and connect with characters and themes. I also teach older students how to close read passages, understand their hidden meaning, and support their interpretation with specific evidence.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I am qualified to help students develop study skills as I have worked as a tutor and teacher for the past eight years. During this time, I have instructed my students in being organized, developing good study habits, and finding successful ways to prepare for tests. I helped children organize their binders so they keep track of their papers and have encouraged them to have a daily planner and write down all assignments. I have taught middle school students how to take Cornell Notes and how to study from them for the test. Similarly, I have coached students in breaking up large portions of material into manageable parts, testing one's knowledge of this material, and showing one's knowledge in a test situation.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

Reading helps my students expand their vocabulary. When reading passages together, we discuss unfamiliar words and use the context to determine their meaning. I also find the Wordly Wise books useful in teaching the connotations of words as well as Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

ACT English

The English section of the ACT tends to be the easiest one to master. I methodically teach or review all conventions that the ACT tests. I then have the students practice answering test questions until they successfully apply their grammar knowledge in a multiple choice context.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

The reading section of the ACT tends to be the most difficult one. In preparing my students to score as many point as possible, we determine a strategy that will work for them. We begin by identifying the type of writing that is easiest for them to understand. For many, this happens to be the prose fiction passage. I urge the students to start with the passage they find most accessible and spend more time on it. This is a way to score the most points. We also analyze question types and learn how to effectively tackle them. During our time together, my students discover a strategy that will help them reach their best score.

I would love to help your son or daughter improve their writing skills. In teaching writing, I break up the process into manageable parts. We brainstorm ideas, look for evidence, create an outline, draft, and then revise. Your child will learn that writing takes time, and that a truly good paper requires a lot of effort and patience. Furthermore, your child will learn how to structure and write a variety of papers and will have a ready approach for most prompts. I have had great success in helping students express their ideas on paper.

During the course of our sessions, students with dyslexia grow into confident and skilled writers.

Raised my daughter's English ACT score by 6 points

My daughter had taken the ACT two times but it was still not as high as we would have liked. We went to Lena to assist in raising her English score. They met twice a week for three weeks, we have now received the results and my daughter raised her English score by six points and the overall score went up two points. We were very happy with Lena and definitely recommend her.
