In the classroom I enjoy helping students add tools to their intellectual toolboxes. You need to understand the basics of the major theories. Yes, you get to pick a favorite, but you need to have a working knowledge of them all. It helps you understand and communicate with those who are using a different theoretical perspective. Then let’s talk data – collecting, analyzing, reporting! Be confident you can tell good research reports from sloppy (or biased) ones.
But what good is learning all this if you don’t take it out for a test drive? In my business and public service work I create spaces for interns to practice what they learn. And when it is time to hit the workforce, either as a new grad or as part of a transition to a new career, we strategize the best way to gain traction in a wide variety of well-paid occupations. Together we are building a growing response to the question: So what do you do with a Sociology major, anyway?
I like working with students individually or in smaller groups, where our work together has the greatest impact. We can work at a pace that is comfortable, taking time on things that don’t make sense and moving faster through things that are clear. You learn in a way that makes the most sense for you based on your learning style and assigned coursework. For writing projects I provide substantive feedback and suggestions so your ideas come through clearly and powerfully. Whether you need help for a particular concept or would like ongoing support through a course, I am here to help. Interested in learning a topic or skill outside of a regular course? I can customize a lesson plan to match.
