Hi. My name is Jim. I have a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Marquette University and another bachelor degree in math from Illinois State University. I have also attended summer classes for 4 years that taught me how to include real life situations in math curriculum. These classes also showed me different methods to teach math topics so that all students are able to comprehend the topics.

I have been teaching for the last 20 years. Before that I worked as a mechanical engineer in the nuclear power industry. I have spent most of those 20 years teaching high school classes which have included Algebra 1 to AP Calculus AB and everything in between. As for on-line tutoring, I have been been doing it for over five years. On-line tutoring has helped me a lot in the classroom. It has shown me the different ways students learn, and led me to different ways to teach topics based on students' learning styles.

In the classroom and when tutoring, I ask a lot of questions when I am helping students solve problems. This way they are more involved in the process, and I can see where they are struggling. This teaching strategy helps the student understand the process being used to solve a problem and gets them to use past math knowledge. I get a great deal of satisfaction when a student has that light bulb go off, and they understand the reasoning used to solve a problem. I feel it is important for students to understand the reasoning that goes into the steps used to solve a problem as it it is to just do the steps because that is the method that needs to be used.

Knowledgeable and VERY patient.

James is my son's AP Calculus tutor. My son's teacher is determined to stay on schedule and that has lead to him pushing ahead regardless of where his students are. James has closed that gap for my son, bridging concepts not covered in class but still present on homework, quizzes and tests. He's very patient and my son has returned to the videos of their session to refresh his memory on how to solve problems. This has allowed my son to build a solid foundation and do quite well in class.

Patient

Very patient and is willing to answer questions nicely. The writing was a bit iffy, but it was understandable since it was getting late. Occasional train in the background was a bit rough, but you can't really control that, so also understandable. Overall great.
