Hello! My name is Gail Katz, and I taught school for many years before becoming a full-time substitute and private tutor.

My years of substituting are equivalent to approximately 6 full years of teaching experience. I have substituted most grade levels, as well as most subject areas. Since I have experience subbing in classrooms with kids ranging from 4 to 17 years old, I’ve decided to work one on one with young students in 1st through 4th grade. Unfortunately, because I spend so much time preparing for each tutoring session, I‘ve had to limit the number of private students I see in the time I have.

My experience with ADHD children comes from 2 places. One place is from the wide range of classrooms I work in. Today, students that makeup classrooms are diverse in ability and disability, and it is not unusual for a classroom to have 5-10 ADHD students. But I have to say that the majority of my experience with ADHD came from raising my own 2 ADHD children. As challenging as it was, my children were wonderful! They were great kids! But, personally “living it” helped me to understand the difficulties and the struggles that most parents in this situation experience. While I was dealing with those kinds of challenges, I attended seminars and workshops to learn as much as possible through lectures, question-and-answer sessions, and a plethora of resource books.

If you are looking for a devoted, compassionate, patient, and nurturing tutor for your child, you have found that tutor. As I mentioned earlier, I am very limited in the number of students I can take, so please reach out to me as soon as possible if you are interested in either online tutoring or in-person tutoring.

I have been using a MacBook Pro computer for the past 5 years. I search the internet, use iPhoto, iMovie and I've made many Keynote presentations. I have had countless hours of one-to-one instruction at the Apple Store in order to learn how to utilize all of these programs.

Throughout my substitute teaching career, I have subbed for Middle School ESL classes. This past year I had 30 consecutive days of teaching a 6th grade ESL class for a teacher who left unexpectedly. I was responsible for planning and fulfilling the school's requirements for this class.

I am a certified teacher in Illinois and hold a current Type 03 (K-9) teaching certificate. I did my teaching in Evanston School District 65, and after raising my children, returned the field of education. I have been a "preferred" substitute in North Shore School District 112 and Deerfield School District 109 for the past 4-5 years. Working with children is my passion and my goal is to see students succeed!
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I find that math is fascinating in that there is only one correct answer to a problem, but numerous ways of figuring out the one answer. As a contracted teacher, I taught all of the fifth grader math, reading and social studies. As a substitute teacher, I've taught math to students in kindergarten through 8th grade. I treat each student as an individual and know that each child learns differently. My enthusiasm is contagious and I have many techniques for making the learning of math a fun experience!
Phonics,

Phonics

Substitute teaching has given me many hours of experience teaching children in the primary grades the letters of the alphabet and their individual sounds. I've also completed lessons on putting letters (consonant blends, consonant-vowel-consonant) together, sounding them out and then reading the word. There are so many "fun" activities to do to engage children in this learning process. Remembering what the sounds and words mean comes from repeating the word, acting it out, finding the sound in a story-telling session, and perhaps doing an art project that focuses on the newly learned sound or word. I find it so important to remember that the attention span of young children is quite short, so the activities planned should be appropriate for the age group.

I have been a substitute teacher for many years and have had numerous positions in bilingual and dual languages classes. In addition, my former business employed many non-English speaking men and women. I am a stickler for proper grammar, spelling and punctuation, and I feel that I have had sufficient experience conversing in English with non-native English speakers.

Great Tutor

Gail has made the math sessions very enjoyable. My daughter looks forward to seeing Gail every week. We are looking forward to using Gail again next year.

Wonderful tutor

Gail is wonderful. She is flexible and accommodates changing schedules. She is warm and patient and can work with kids of different abilities. My son is in first grade and is frustrated by the slow pace of the class. He is gifted but also has ADHD. Gail is able to find ways to motivate him to work on writing and spelling which are his weakest areas. She is also teaching him how to take assessment tests. She plays cool games with him like hangman. She is a very caring person. I recommend her to parents looking for a tutor for their young child.

Very prepared

Gail K. came to our house having literally done her homework. She brought materials that greatly helped me with my project. Gail listened to exactly what I asked of her during our email and phone conversations. She was a wonderful help during our session. Gail is also a very nice person who is willing to help you around the student's schedule, not hers. I would definitely use Gail again as a tutor and recommend her to my friends.
