My heart goes out to students who struggle with writing and reading. Both of these activities come naturally for me and I enjoy them immensely. Giving willing students and opportunity to fall in love with my own passions excites me. I prefer to meet in a public setting such as a library. Considering that I live in the Jacksonville vicinity, meeting in Bullard at the city library may be appropriate for parents in south Tyler.

My own passion for communication skills such as writing gives me an edge. Additionally, the joys I get from reading and writing help me translate well to students. I have taught varying ages--high school down to elementary. I have also worked with numerous students in UIL competition areas such as ready writing, spelling, and impromptu speaking.

Let me know if I can be of service to your family or to you as an individual. We will see if a tutoring schedule can be hammered out.

Common Core

Common Core testing is quite similar to STAAR testing in the skills and expectations they encourage. With regard to English/Reading/Writing CC is nearly identical to STAAR. I have evaluated both sets of expectations while writing curriculum for an online education company called Shmoop, Inc. Tutoring students in reading comprehension and writing simply requires the ability to break down the material into understandable chunks that the student can grasp. It also requires being attentive to individual struggles of the student and find comparisons that they can identify with and apply to the subject matter.

I hold a B.A. Composite English from U.T. Tyler and later earned my M.Ed Curriculum and Instruction from Dallas Baptist University. I have also been working off and on as a freelance writer for a number of years. My work has been published in children's magazines such as Highlights for Children and Nature Friend. Most recently I served as the administrative director for a private Early Education facility in which my primary aim was to establish curriculum and assessment guidelines for the campus. As you can see my work has taken me through most, if not all, the developmental ages of students.

STAAR

As an educator for over fifteen years, I have been involved in various levels of STAAR test prep. tutoring and instruction. Furthermore, my graduate work focused on curriculum and instruction which means I have been trained in assessing curriculum for its correlation to testing material. I have also evaluated lesson plans for the proper amounts of testing components. Tutoring students in high-stake testing requires breaking down the material into understandable chunks that the student can grasp.
