As a teacher of mathematics and science for twenty years, tutoring has helped me to keep grounded in what I really enjoy, teaching. I have tutored K-8 math and science, from PreAlgebra to Calculus, Chemistry and Physics. I am uniquely qualified for ACT/SAT college entrance exam prep and work for a popular tutoring company who has won awards. I am an experienced upper-level Kumon math instructor and foster strong performance from students on selective enrollment test prep (SSAT, ISEE) and curricula such as AOPS and math/science contests like Kangaroo Math, Math Counts, and Science Olympiad. In addition, I have helped students on ELA curriculum including reading, writing, grammar, and spelling.

I understand the importance of teaching content, but more important are the good habits that are acquired through tutoring like order, practice, and hard work to develop deep understanding and thirst for knowledge instead of simply trying to complete tasks. In tutoring, I first create a comfortable environment by establishing a genuine repartee. Tutoring should always be light and fun, and when good humor and a genuine interest in the learner are present, it facilitates engagement. I also instill good work and study habits by modeling them.

Most importantly though, my success is rooted in planning together with parents and communicating. I typically begin tutoring with the student's curriculum but am armed with a wide range of educational resources. I also believe that good questioning and listening are key pedagogical tools to build meaning. Understanding involves skills that allow students to be able to use a variety of strategies and actively show what they know by use of concrete objects, drawing and writing, therefore promoting many opportunities for making connections, problem solving, and higher-order thinking.

I am humbled by the trust placed in me in the important task of educating your child and will communicate with you throughout and work to the best of my ability to help your child succeed.

Spanish

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker and have taught Spanish language to students as a class and also tutoring. I have taught it as a language and in the content area (taught math in Spanish). Spanish is my first language and I am proud to share it with others. I also enjoy having conversations with my nieces and nephews in Spanish, even though they do not know Spanish fluently.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with students in reading and writing (3rd-5th grades) and am a firm believer that students learn reading and writing organically when they have opportunities to read what they like, can share what they know by writing, drawing, expression. The students I have worked with were eager to learn because they were sharing what the learned with others. They also became good readers and shared books and stories they enjoyed with one another. Reading and writing is easier when it is meaningful and about shared meanings.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

As an elementary math teacher and tutor I teach students conceptually, which means they do not have to relearn each year. I feel algorithms are important in learning math but learning how mathematics is developed is equally important for a good, solid understanding. These skills transfer to advanced mathematics. As you can see, I am a teacher and tutor of middle school and high school mathematics as well. In teaching and tutoring elementary math I feel that representations (pictures, drawing, manipulatives) are important as well as writing and proof in mathematics. I am a constructivist/Vygostky philosophically and believe that all students can achieve deep understandings of math as long as the learning environment promotes it.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have taught/tutored in Algebra 1 and believe the best way to learn is by developing the concepts being learned. I also feel it is important to follow where students are, because they know a lot already, and build from there. My style is Socratic/Vygotskian and stresses practice built on understanding.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught/tutored in Algebra 2 and enjoy helping students understand math. I am a constructivist building on what students know and helping them discover and self-regulate. I am a firm believer on solid conceptual understanding and feel this is so important in math. In other words simple memorization is not the best method to learn.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have tutored in Chemistry and enjoy the subject. I teach science and mathematics conceptually and feel that when you understand what and why you are doing something, simply memorizing is not helpful and unnecessary. I have always been drawn to Chemistry because of its' discrepant events (you don't always understand right away what you observe). I also can provide resources to help.

I have tutored students in Physics and am skilled in helping students understand how the laws of motion work. These include kinematics, energy, simple harmonic motion, momentum, gravitation, circular motion, waves, and electrostatics. I am able to apply the mathematics (calculus) involved in physics to show how the concepts and laws of motion are derived.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I am an experienced Prealgebra teacher and have tutored students in the subject. I believe that it is important to develop math concepts by using manipulatives, drawing, proof, etc. Mathematics is knowledge under construction and once developed is always there.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I have taught ACT Math courses and also high school math. I build on strong conceptual understanding (Socratic and Vygotskian) to instill retention and know-how. I believe when students understand well they won't forget. I also stress mathematical proof, drawing (show what you know) and mathematical argument. A solid foundational in mathematics is fundamental for further work in mathematics and sciences.

Trigonometry

I enjoy teaching and tutoring in Trigonometry as well as other mathematics classes. Trigonometry is more easily understood when one understands how the definition are derived. I always emphasize the unit circle and everything else pretty falls into place. I am a conceptual learner and therefore I promote deep conceptual understanding in my teaching/tutoring. I believe in a Socratic method of learning which involves instructional conversation that enables the learner to learn within proximity of their understanding (Vygotstky). Trigonometry has always been one of the math classes I have enjoyed teaching/tutoring the most.

Exceptional Math Tutor

We are a North Shore Chicago family who engaged Gabriel to work with our child who was in the last semester of an honors algebra I class and earning a low D. To make a long story short, my child finished the class with a B+ and was recommended for honors geometry in fairly a competitive program. That was accomplished in two months. But the grades are secondary. My child was floundering and losing his interest in math, though completely capable of doing the work. In a very short time Gabriel was able to get him back on track and develop fundamental understanding of mathematical concepts that go beyond the book and tests. Gabriel is exceptional at communicating with and teaching young adults. His knowledge of mathematics is complete. And he is able develop within his students a similar knowledge, confidence and facility with math. Gabriel is also an educator and so he has been immensely helpful in our understanding of where our child is academically and how that fits with his current school. We are greatly appreciative of the time Gabriel provided, he was very generous and flexible. We highly recommend Gabriel for bright, young students struggling with math concepts. You cannot do better.

Engaging Tutor

Gabe knows how to connect with the student on their level to keep them engaged during the entire tutoring session! He remembers key talking points about our son’s interests and brings up those points regularly to let our son know he cares about his world outside of just learning.

Very helpful with SAT

Gabriel worked on SAT math problems with me and was able to help me figure out what I didn't understand and where I had gone wrong. He is patient and knowledgable.

Gabriel teaches his students how to be problem solvers

Gabriel’s methodology is to help his students learn how to become problem solvers, which has been a huge win for my daughter’s confidence in Geometry and Spanish!

THE BEST!!

Fantastic teacher! She says Gabriel should get 11 stars every time. He has helped her bring her grades up significantly. Her teacher (parent teacher conferences) said she has noticed a huge change in Ellas confidence and understanding of the subject matter.
