ADHD

Qualifications: I have been a certified special education teacher for the last 12 years in Hawaii. During this time, I worked with many students who were diagnosed with both ADD and ADHD. I also am writing my dissertation at this time for my Ph.D. in Special Education. At the current time, I am a District Autism Consultant Teacher and continue to observe students and adults with ADD/ADHD. A condition characterized by severe problems of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. Once a person with ADHD/ADD begins a task, it is difficult for them to mentally switch to a new activity. There is not a simple diagnostic test for ADHD/ADD, but there is strong evidence linking neurological abnormalities to ADHD. ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. To be diagnosed with ADHD the child must have symptoms before they are 7. a few of the symptoms of ADHD are: -fidgeting and squirming in their seats and the inability to stay in their seat. -Feelings of restlessness and a need to be always on the go. -Excessive talking and interrupting others. -Blurting out the answers before being called on for their turn. ADD- Attention Deficit Disorder without the hyperactivity. Symptoms of ADD include: -Carelessness and mistakes on assignments. -Failure to follow through on tasks. -Poor organization skills. -Easily distracted. -Losing things -Avoiding tasks that require a lot of mental effort. -Poor organizational skills -Forgetful
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Qualifications: I have been a special education teacher in the state of Hawaii for 11 years and 9 months, working with children with autism. Currently, I am a District Autism Consultant Teacher for the Central District on Oahu. I am writing my dissertation for my Ph.D. in special education with an emphasis on autism. Autism is a pervasive developmental disability characterized by extreme withdrawal, cognitive deficits, language disorders, self-stimulation, and onset before the age of 30 months. People diagnosed with autism have difficulty in three different areas: -Social interaction -Behavior -Communication -----Social Interaction ---The person with autism may lack social skills. They may not respond when a person calls them by name. They lack empathy, and are unaware of others feelings. They have poor eye contact, and prefer to play alone. -----Behavior ---This person had specific routines and rituals and if they are disturbed at any time, chaos ensues. They may perform repetitive movements, such as hand-flapping or spinning. Also, sensory reactors are magnified. They may extremely sensitive to light, noise, or touch, yet they are somewhat oblivious to pain. -----Language ---The person with autism may have delayed speech or not speak at all. They may not look a person in the eye when they are talking to them. They can't start a conversation and keep it going. May use a different tone or rhythm when they speak. They may repeat words verbatim, but not understand what they mean. They sometimes do not seem to understand simple questions or directions.
