I've got many years of tutoring and teaching experience under my belt. I was a double major in mathematics and computer science, with a PhD in Applied Mathematics currently in progress through the University of MD, College Park. At the collegiate level, I have experience as a graduate teaching assistant, having taught Linear Algebra as well as Multi-Variable/Vector Calculus. In the private realm, I've tutored everything from middle school level Pre-Algebra all the way through collegiate Abstract Algebra. My specialty centers around discrete mathematics, number theory, and algorithms and complexity theory on the computer science side. However, I am equally happy working in any realm of mathematics including major areas such as pre-algebra, geometry, precalculus, trigonomoetry, calculus, abstract algebra, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics.

My love and passion for mathematics stems in large part from a few very dedicated and talented teachers that I've had over the years. Like so many things, I believe mathematics can be a fundamentally simple subject IF a student has been given a rock solid foundation in the basics; without this, it can instead be a daunting and complex world. Most of what we do in mathematics has a geometric interpretation, meaning we can draw a picture to represent the problem or formula we're trying solve. Having this sort of insight into what a problem is asking can make all the difference in understanding; it makes it very easy to check our answers, and can tell us very quickly if the answer we've calculated for a problem even makes sense. The goal in all my teaching and tutoring is to give students the tools they need in order to check their work and answers, and know immediately if their answer to a problem makes sense and is correct or not; with these tools in hand, I find most students are able to approach any realm of mathematics with a great deal of confidence and success.

Logic,

Logic

My background in Math and Comp Sci encompasses quite a bit of logic; including discrete math at the undergraduate level (University of MD CMSC250) and Mathematical Logic at the graduate level (University of MD MATH712 + 713). These courses covered basic boolean logic, including connectives, truth tables, and equivalences; predicate logic; completeness and incompleteness among other core topics. Both of my degrees depending heavily on proofs, including basic techniques such as induction, proof by contradiction, etc; these concepts were used extensively in my graduate abstract algebra, algorithms, and approximation algorithms courses. (MATH601-602; CMSC451, 651, and 858).

Drums

I'm currently employed as a full time percussionist by the Air Force Band of Mid-America at Scott AFB, IL. I've served 10 years as a professional musician in this capacity, having won the job back in 2005 via competitive audition. I served as a Guest Artist in Residence and Lecturer of Music at the University of Nebraska Lincoln in the 2010-2011 academic year. I also toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra during 2005. Prior to that time, I studied for four years with noted drummer and educator Steve Fidyk while pursuing Jazz Studies at the University of MD college park. I teach 3-4 drum students a week. I teach technique using the natural body movement concepts of Joe Morello, and build coordination using exercises and concepts from the lexicon of Alan Dawson and Gary Chester, author of "The New Breed."

Flexible, patient, extremely knowledgeable. I'm very happy.

I hired Steven for my 14-year-old daughter who is a great student, but struggles with math. Steven has been flexible and very patient. I watched a part of the online lesson, and I learned something. My daughter really likes his teaching style. He writes everything down on the virtual classroom board so it is easily followed. I expect to have a long term tutoring relationship with Steven.

Wow

We were very lucky to get a short notice appointment . But you would never know- it was short notice. Steven was super relaxed, patient and knowledgeable. Not at all flustered & above all my son actually enjoyed it and “Got it”

Personable, kind and a great tutor

Precalculus graphing of sine/cosine. He makes it easier to understand the material. I felt comfortable telling him when I didn't understand something. He helped me understand it.

Great logic teacher

My 14-year old son Tobin is thriving in Logic once again. The 1.5 hour lesson was engaging and helpful. We are going to use Steven again. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Knowledgeable and patient tudor

Steven is currently helping my daughter with her high school math work. Over the last few weeks we’ve seen her test scores improve. This has helped to improve her confidence and letter grade in the course as well. He is also very flexible in scheduling and is very responsive when it comes to messaging and communcating.

Needed to understand concepts and work through problems under the wire, Steven was a great help!

Steven responded quickly to my request for help and cleared up some concepts in discrete math that had been vague to me for much of the semester. He helped me consider how to conceptualize a problem so I can apply the right tools to solve it. I learned how to think of a problem in a way that, given certain formulas and processes, I could come to a solution! Much appreciated!

great teacher

Good at explaining the problem. He took the time to explaining problems to me . He was patient and didn’t mind repeating it when I didn’t quiet understand. Really enjoyed it.
