I won't do the work for the student, but I will do everything that is within my ability to help encourage success. I can work around anyone's schedule and tutor anyone as long as the student feels my services can be of help. As the NASA motto goes "Failure is not an option" and so that has been in my mission as an educator.

I am a certified Connecticut Teacher with over 10 years experience in classroom management and in school tutoring, so I know how to adjust my approach to helping students who are having difficulty with the material and remain patient and provide assurance that the student does not feel they won't succeed. My certification specialty is in History/Social Studies but I am also skilled in English/Language Arts, and Writing.

Grammar,

Grammar

In my years as both a student and a teacher, I have found grammar to be key in communication, especially in written assignments. I have worked with students as a fellow student, tutor and teacher in improving their written and oral communication skills in their assignments to better get across what ideas they are trying to convey.
Proofreading

Proofreading

My job title as a teacher and background both as a student and tutor make proofreading essential for all written assignments. I have proof read numerous drafts of papers as a teacher, and helped students look for ways to improve their drafts through corrections to errors and suggestions on ways to "polish" certain sections of their writing. It is also my experience that haste makes waste when it comes to proofreading, and both the teacher/tutor and the student must both look over the work to check for errors.

Reading

As both a teacher and tutor, I have helped students better understand and improve their grasp of reading by expanding their vocabulary, learning new ideas from different points of view and master grammar. I have found in almost every subject I have taken, taught and tutored in, reading is a requirement to better understand what is necessary to learn and build upon. In my experience tutoring, I have helped students try to clarify a reading assignment from a book or textbook, and help them understand what is being asked of them and what reading questions they may have to answer as an assessment to prove they have mastered the assignment.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is essential to writing and communicating. As a teacher I am proficient in helping students master their oral and written communication skills. In Writing I have found it key to help students practice reading, speaking and writing words they are learning and telling their differences such as if the word is a noun or verb.

English

English,

English

As a Teacher and Tutor, I have helped students understand sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. I have also helped students with their language arts to expand their knowledge of the meaning of words and how to phrase them according to how the sentence or assignment is structured and in conversation. My past tutoring experience has been at both the secondary and college level, helping students with paper and reading assignments where in they may have to answer questions based off an essay or book, along with writing a paper if required for the assignment.

Literature,

Literature

As a teacher and tutor, I have found literature essential in forming the "human connection" to learning. Works by Shakespeare, George Orwell, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens and hundreds of others help students learn more about cultures and people in general. As a teacher I have had my students read extracts from books such as John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men", and Elie Wiesel's "Night" to establish connections for students to the material outside of the textbook. Literature to me also helps students see more to the world than reality TV or Xbox and what can be gained by reading these famous works.

Writing

Writing is essential to education no matter in what field of study a student is learning. In my experience tutoring and teaching I have students write in order to make persuasive arguments supported by expository facts to improve their written communication skills in preparing them for life after school. Time and effort are critical in my experience to helping the student go over each draft of their writing assignment and make improvements as well as proofread for errors so they don't get marked down, this does not mean I do the work for them but in order to help them learn to become self-reliant in their writing abilities as they get older.

Psychology

Psychology in my experience as a student and teacher is the process of understand who we are. I have taken several college courses on basic psychology and educational psychology to improve my knowledge base of our own awareness and how teachers and tutors interpret things compared to those of the students. My method in tutoring Psychology is always to point to examples of things rather than learn directly from the book, for example; a textbook can not tell you what makes up the parts of your identity, only you yourself can do that through the events that have shaped your life, what makes you more comfortable or more afraid and so on.

Great!

My stepdaughter’s 1st session with Christopher went very well and she now feels much more prepared for her test! We plan to schedule with him to prepare for upcoming tests.

Lori, 1 lesson with Christopher

Thanks so much for a great tutor time!

He held a conversation and immediately stepped in teaching about ancient history. My 9 year old really loved their conversation and was excited to continue after the lesson was finished. I'm so happy to see how much interaction there was and how he held his attention for the entire hour.
