I'm a friendly and approachable Ivy-League graduate with a love for language, decades of writing experience, and a gift for teaching all levels in English vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and writing. Understanding of common issues students face in test prep, I also offer solutions and accountability for students facing classroom and standardized (SAT, AP) exams, and specialize in substantive test prep for the current SAT Reading and Writing sections. My experience as a Yale alumni network interviewer and studies in the UCLA and UC Berkeley College Counseling certificate programs have given me additional insight into the most important aspects of student application essays and college admission interviews.

My aim is always to draw out the strengths of each of my students, to elevate their thinking, and, by helping them develop new skills, increase their confidence in their abilities. My approach to counseling is similar in that I assist students in identifying what it is they value and most want in a college, as well as what they want more specifically from the colleges to which they apply. Just as important are the talents, interests, and personal qualities applicants stand to contribute to the quality of student life and a school's academic environment. In helping students with application essays and interviews, I assist them in authentically and effectively conveying their interests, goals, and character in a manner that improves their chances of admission to the colleges of their choice.

I enjoy working students of all nationalities on improving their written and spoken English. More importantly, they have all viewed our sessions as successful and productive! I especially enjoy comparing and contrasting the characteristics of English with my students' respective native languages. This technique provides my students with an additional level of understanding as they gain competence and confidence in their desired areas of improvement.

French

My interest in French language and culture has been life-long: I studied French from the First Grade, through college, including in a semester at University of Paris through UC Berkeley. I have several French friends with whom I communicate in French, have used my language skills in my past career in business, and frequently am complemented on my accent, which, thanks to my early training and residency in Paris, is very authentic. In addition I participate in courses and events at the Alliance Francaise, and recently took a 3rd year French course at UC Davis that emphasized speaking, writing and grammar skills. It was a great "refresher," and I could not have enjoyed it more. I especially enjoyed watching the younger and less experienced students gain competence and confidence. It was also a great reminder that in this interconnected world, the ability to speak and understand any foreign language is a great asset.

Handwriting

I love handwriting and am happy to ensure it is a skill that continues to be passed on to all students. Since Elementary School, where I won the Best Handwriting Award, people have commented on my "perfect" handwriting. I acquired this skill almost entirely by practicing recommended techniques on the traditional specially-lined paper. Now. people occasionally ask me to handwrite notes for them. I also have studied handwriting analysis with a professional handwriting analysis expert and understand the variations that individual personalities tend to make when writing in what used to be called "cursive," as well as the special approach required for left-handed students. As you may have noticed, I have perfect reviews from my students. I'm a great tutor of all of the subjects in which I've qualified, and my students seem to really appreciate my approach to teaching and learning. I'm also especially talented at teaching subjects such as handwriting in a way that ensures a good foundation in each component of a particular skill. In handwriting, it is important to take this approach, as learning how to write each part of a letter before learning the entire letter is required for most letters in the alphabet.

Literature,

Literature

I'm a tutor, writer, writing coach, and have a lifelong appreciation of great literature. At Yale, I pursued and excelled in English and other Literature courses, such as The English Novel (one entire course per century), The American Novel, Shakespeare (one course in the comedies and one in the tragedies), American Poetry, French Literature, French Poetry, Russian Literature, and Literary Theory, among others. I've been able to help students of all levels learn how to approach literature in a way that reveals to them the richness of meaning conveyed by the author's art. For fiction, this requires students not only to comprehend the literal meaning of the author's words, but also to understand deeper levels of meaning communicated by the author through the skillful use of language and literary convention. I help students reach this next level of comprehension by providing them with ways of identifying key literary devices and elements in the work, understanding how they are used in context, and inferring meaning from their use. The next step in the process involves organizing and logically analyzing the results of those observations and inferences. Of course, this ultimately requires students to put their conclusions and evidence of support for those conclusions, in writing. I help students succeed in writing out their analyses by providing them with tools for organizing, articulating, and supporting their interpretations and conclusions clearly and concisely. When my students reach a feeling of competence in these last steps is when they experience the biggest improvement in their grades and scores. In fact, many have called to thank me -- even months later - crediting my work with them for their success.

Excellent and Extremely Helpful

Her guidance to my son to work through his essays has been excellent. The approach provided by her has helped him immensely improve his writing abilities not only in his compositions but also in other subjects. Additionally, her eye for detail towards explaining the requirement of the essay prompts and how to trigger the thought process has been exceptional. I highly recommend her.
