Bio

I enjoy teaching young children, youth, and adults, simply because I enjoy teaching, period! I realize that each individual has specific needs, challenges, and gifts, and as such needs individualized tutoring.

I am very patient and capable of breaking down things to the simplest form so that the subject matter can be understood. I find creative ways to teach, as I know that not all children learn in the same manner: some are more visual than auditory; some are more hands-on than abstract...

I find creative ways to teach, as I know that not all children learn in the same manner: some are more visual than auditory; some are more hands-on than abstract and so on. I have seen different children go through the tutoring process and successfully accomplish their goal: learning and mastering a subject with which they had difficulty in the past. I have many years of experience tutoring one on one, as well as quite a few years of teaching in the classroom, both foreign languages and English. I am committed to helping you achieve your goal, no matter what!

I was born in Italy and did all my elementary schooling in Italian. When I arrived in North America, I had to learn English and French at the same time. I continued to study both languages throughout the years that led up to my Bachelor of Arts degree, including Spanish. Along the way, I also completed American Sign Language Level IV. I have been able to keep up my Italian language, as it is my mother tongue, and still the only language I use to communicate with my mom.

I hold a Clear Multiple Subjects Credential K-12 and a Clear Single Subject Credential in Italian.

Please note that if I need to travel more than 30 miles each way, I need to charge $60.00/hr because of the travel time and to cover my gas expenses.
I am available for long term, short term, and one-time tutoring in person and online.
Ciao e a presto! A bientot! Hasta pronto!

Hard of Hearing,

Hard of Hearing

In my American Sign Language course of study, I learned about the difference between deaf and hard of hearing, ASL and oral interpreting, and all the nuances that hearing impairment causes. I hold a certificate of ASL (Level IV) through the Canadian Hearing Society. I was immersed in deaf culture and all its nuances for 2 years, and I learned the psychology, sociology, and communication aspects of hearing impairment. I know that hard-of-hearing people do not always want to necessarily identify with the deaf population, and that some opt for oral interpretation, and some have been directed to learn lip-reading rather than ASL. I understand about CODA (children of deaf adults) and the dynamics involved in families where everyone is hearing and there is only one deaf person. Blindness separates one from things; deafness separates one from people. My own father was hearing impaired, so I have first-hand experience on how that affects a family.

Cooking

I have been given the go-ahead to teach Italian home-made cooking for the Santa Clarita Parks & Recreation Department starting in January 2011. I have taken an extension course at UCLA taught by Norman Kolpas, leading author, writer, and speaker, on How to Write a Cookbook. I am a very experienced and skilled cook. My grandparents in Italy were restaurateurs and my father grew up in the restaurant business. He taught everything he knew to my mom and in turn, my mom taught me. I started cooking family meals at the age of 11. I enjoy cooking; it is my passion, especially Italian cooking. I can make pizza dough from scratch, meat sauce, lasagna, cannelloni, ravioli and tortellini from fresh pasta, risotto, tiramisu', cannoli, Sicilian and Neapolitan, and so much more.

Great teacher!

Solid Italian tutor fluent in the language as well as the day-to-day more colloquial language spoken by Italians, ie idioms, form, etc. highly recommended. Structured lessons which keeps things on point and organized. Great personality as well.

Incredibly helpful and patient.

Rosaria really helped me work on my Italian with thorough but fun lessons. I met with her twice a week for a few months to develop my Italian skills and I really feel like she improved my knowledge of the language as well as Italian culture. Thank you!

My Italian improved drastically!

After nearly 20 sessions with Rosiaria my Italian improved drastically. My mother-in-law who speaks only Italian even commented on how happy she is that I'm learning! Rosaria gave me the foundation I needed to feel more confident with the basics. My husband and I are planning to spend 3 months in Italy this summer where I hope to get real-world experience using the language every day. Thank you, Roasaria for setting me up for success!

Knowledgeable, patient and encouraging!!

Rosaria has help me so much with my Italian! I've had several lessons with her working on different parts of Italian. Today we worked on verb and the grammar structure of sentences. Then we went over passato prossimo with the verb essere. She is always willing to help me with any area I need help, including conversation.

Rosaria is helping me be successful learning ASL!

Rosaria has been an amazing tutor in helping me learn ASL. She helps me work through how to sign words and phrases and does it in a way that sticks with me so I can remember how to sign them later. Rosaria is very responsive and flexible in her schedule, making it easy to schedule lessons and meet. She is kind and encouraging, especially when I’m overwhelmed by the assignment I’m trying to work through, helping break it down into manageable pieces. I can’t tell you how glad I am we found Rosaria!

Rosaria C was a fantastic tutor

Rosaria C was a fantastic tutor during a two-week sprint to prepare myself for a government-issued Italian exam. She quickly assessed my level, made sure she understood what the exam would be testing, and then devised a detailed strategy to focus on the areas where I most needed help. It worked! I got one of my best ever scores on an Italian exam despite having been very rusty just prior to having Rosaria as my tutor. Learning a language is a lot of work, but Rosaria made it very engaging and enjoyable. She went above and beyond to research texts and conversation topics that would best prepare me for my test. Best of all, Rosaria has a great sense of humor and we laughed a lot together. I would highly recommend Rosaria as a tutor to anyone, whether long-term or for short-term engagements. You won't regret it!
