I believe children learn best when they relate what they are learning to things that are relevant in their own lives. Because of this, I work with children to discover the fun in learning by finding out what kind of learner they are and developing a personalized plan to keep them moving forward in their studies. I am able to offer a variety of learning techniques by combining patience, discipline, parent communication, and flexibility to provide your child the support they need to perform at their absolute personal best.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and have had internship experience at the elementary level. Included in this were classes on teaching young children math, science and reading and writing techniques. I also have years of experience as a classroom aide and can assist children in all aspects of curriculum.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have worked in the public school system for 13 years and have served as a reading tutor in the elementary classroom setting, serving children from kindergarten to 5th grade. I also started a phonics enrichment program for the children in the after school programs in order to boost support for reading activities within the school. Phonics involves helping children recognize the relationship between letters and the sounds they make in order to learn to read. Once children have made the connection of letters and their sounds, they can pronounce printed words by blending the sounds together.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have over twenty years' experience working with children in tutoring in an after-school setting that required planning and organization in order for me to deliver quality support to the students I assist. I have also obtained a portion of my degree through on-line classes which required me to keep organized and self motivated in order to be successful. This experience enhanced my study skills and organizational process to the point that I feel confident I can share with students in order to improve their own study habits and outcomes. Study skills involve the organization of materials and thoughts in order to master the material presented. Children need to learn to plan what they need to accomplish. At the beginning of the study session, they should write down exactly what they want to get done (complete two pages of an essay, finish a paper, write a short story, answer ten math questions, learn a new computer function, etc.). Large tasks should be broken down into smaller ones. For example, if an essay is to be written, the tasks might include coming up with a thesis, writing a first paragraph, planning out the points that need to be covered, researching those points, writing each section, etc. Keeping a "log book" or agenda of needs to be accomplished in each study section is helpful. Children can then look over it later and be impressed with themselves! Lastly, keeping studying supplies in a handy place, like in a shoe box. Children can organize them so they can grab what they want quickly, without having to rummage around. In addition, planning a space that is specifically set aside for optimal learning is essential! This would include a quiet area with proper lighting, writing surface and possibly shelving or binder space to store homework and task sheets would be great!

ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder -- also referred to as ADD or ADHD -- is a biological, brain based condition that is characterized by poor attention and distractibility and/or hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. It is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. If left untreated, ADHD can lead to poor school performance, poor social relationships and a general feeling of low self esteem. Difficulties with concentration, mental focus, and control of impulses are common behaviors and can impair a child's daily functioning across a variety settings -- home, school, and in relationships. I have over 20 years experience tutoring children with ADD/ADHD in an after school support program. I have been trained in the IEP process and have been invited to many parent/teacher conferences where I have been asked to give insight on a child's specific behavioral and/or academic progress in relation to concentration, impulsivity, and social interactions. I have also had training in difficult behaviors in the classroom setting and special accommodations that may help the ADD/ADHD student stay focused such as headphone use, colored paper placed underneath work papers, large exercise balls for seats and short breaks between tasks.
