Hello, my new student! I am ready to help you!

I have served as a teacher for 27 years. I have taught grades k through adult. I am positive, honest, and patient. I am a problem-solver and critical thinker, and I have a great deal of experience. Most of all, I believe in the saying, "Be kind and have courage" (Anne Frank & Cinderella). I also have a sense of humor.

I am an active teacher. I currently work Monday through Friday teaching high-need students in grades 3 through 12. I provide personalized instruction in ELA, math, and science. I also teach English second language learners remotely. I love to create personalized lessons to motivate my students! I enjoy teaching courses in basic writing, using rhetorical strategies, and understanding literature. I am a proofreading master.

During the school year, I am the busiest with student requests for help with essay writing to respond to literary prompts. I also receive many requests for help with college application essays.

It's easier to say what I have NOT taught: physics, calculus, coding, and medicine.

My subject areas do include: English Language Arts; phonics; ESL; writing (basic composition, advanced essay, college application essays, research, advanced writing such as critique and synthesis, and graduate research); academic integrity; business writing (including resumes, cover letters, memos, reports, email, etc.); grammar; PSAT/SAT prep; literature (fiction, short stories, drama, poetry, novels); ethics; organizational behavior; time management; coping and life skills; skills for the college-bound student; elder care; mindfulness; history; French; philosophy; entrepreneurship; and marketing.

I am a dog lover! I live by the sea, and this inspires me! I love music and I love singing!

Please contact me here at Wyzant. I look forward to working with you!

It is nice to meet you! I have experience with resume writing, editing, speaking, and interviewing. After I earned my bachelor's degree in English and a minor in business - I started my own business. I accepted resumes. I interviewed and hired employees for nine years. After I sold the business, I began teaching - and that was 24 years ago! During my time as a teacher, I ran a tutoring center and I accepted resumes, interviewed, and hired employees. I taught college freshmen for 13 years and I revealed to them the secrets of giving a speech and presentation. I taught them how to respond to interview questions - first, in writing, so they could get into the habit of being organized in thought, and develop appropriate and concise examples. I helped my college seniors complete a unit before they graduated about how to fill out job applications and how to interview. I have supported my students over the past several years with their writing of resumes and application essays for college/university. One of my strengths is my acumen for strong word choices. I also like to make work visually appealing and organized. I would be happy to help, and I look forward to meeting you!

Grammar,

Grammar

I have been teaching grammar for 26 years. When I was in elementary school, I learned grammar very well. However, in high school, I was placed into Honors English. We were all told: "Read this novel. Write about it." That was it. We did not really cover grammar. When I began teaching, I re-taught myself all of the grammar I needed. I have become accustomed to teaching grammar with stories to make the intangible symbols come alive. I use examples to demonstrate. After I have taught a student, he or she should be able to teach the subject matter back to me! I have graded/proofread over 80,000 essays during my time teaching college/university. I'm ready to help you.
Proofreading

Proofreading

During my 26 years as an educator, I served at the college/university level for 13 years. On average, I taught 8 sections per semester, and each of about 20 students had to complete at least 5 essays formed from 3 drafts for each of the 5 essays. I did the math, once, and I have read, proofread, and offered detailed corrections for both content and mechanics, for about 80,000 papers. Additionally, I have proofread about thirty articles for a spoken podcast and its accompanying blog. I know what I am looking for. I know how to keep academic integrity intact, and I know how to teach you to revise and edit. Proofreading does not scare me. I think this is one of my superpowers. I am ready to help you!

I have taught Language Arts/English; composition; writing sentences to paragraphs to essays; phonics; reading; speaking/presentations; completing a book report; studying literature, and writing critiques, research chapters, and rhetorical essays. I'm quite valuable to have around, because during the past six years, I have been tutoring online for students throughout the USA and globally. I am very aware of the way assignments are constructed, and every single step is important. I can help you. I have worked with ages 3 through adult. Communication is not easy today: the words must be yours, sincere, concise, and inspiring.

Literature,

Literature

Originally, I majored in psychology while I was an undergraduate. As I took more and more classes, I found out I had to keep a pet rat, and gauge its reactions to unpleasant stimuli. This was not for me. I switched my major to English. Henceforth, I learned quite a bit about psychology - but from the glorious characters and stories, poems, dramas, lyrics, and novels that I have enjoyed. I know how to interpret literature, even for any brand new pieces of literature I have never read before. Interpretation is a skill, much like detective work, and I can teach you. I really enjoy the critical thinking, and I enjoy helping my students work on their literature essays.

Writing

Writing

I began writing poetry when I was seven that included themes of social justice. In high school, I became the Features Editor for my school newspaper. Since then, I majored in English as an undergraduate, and I majored in English education for my graduate studies. I have learned and I have taught how to develop interesting, academically sound essays with supporting evidence that is documented. I have taught all of the rhetorical modes, as well as critique, analysis, synthesis, summary, paraphrase, speech-writing, podcast writing, business writing (emails, cover letters, resumes), and post-graduate doctoral level writing and graduate-level research proposals and chapters. I have taught my students how to develop a portfolio. I've written my own blog for fun. Most importantly, I've made it a point to meet authors and read their work about how they complete their writing tasks, such as Stephen King, Jennifer Weiner, and Joyce Carol Oates. Writers are heroes! I'm ready to help you be your own hero. You can do it.

Outstanding!!!

My goodness, where to start! After Michelle LISTENED and reviewed some of my papers she immediately helped me with a plan of action. I learned that it wasn't the big things that were issues but the smaller overlooked structure. Just one of the changes I'm working on is "never assume the reader knows what I'm talking about". That's important as I tend to use terms that might not always be understood. Another point was how to expand words while eliminating the unnecessary. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with my first session and am looking forward to continuing working with Michelle.

Very knowledgeable, caring, thorough, engaging tutor.

My son is 9 years old and is in 4th grade. He was a virtual only student last year and is transitioning back into the classroom this year. Michelle V. is an amazing tutor! She has him engaged and looking forward to his next lesson with her. He had very low confidence with his writing and she ignited a spark and excitement for writing. She is very thorough and organized. She makes learning grammar fun for him, and finds ways to relate it to things he likes to help him remember and apply to his writing. She gives us immediate feedback and things for him to work on between sessions. We are very lucky to have found her. She is always willing to work around our hectic schedule. We highly recommend her for your child as she is a very versatile, experienced, and knowledgeable teacher. We are certain she could help any child improve his or her love for learning.
