Elementary Math

During tutoring lessons, I incorporate visualization activities that I used when I practiced developmental optometry. Visualization is important in understanding elementary math concepts. I achieved certification from the National Tutoring Association as a tutor and academic coach after retiring from optometry in 2011. I enjoy working with children and we have fun during our lessons.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have tutored algebra 1 since 2011. I am certified as a tutor and an academic coach by the National Tutoring Association. I enrolled in math courses through differential and integral calculus. I used algebra in my previous profession as an optometrist. For example, refraction equations involve algebra. I encourage my students to not be intimidated by variables such as "X" and to substitute real numbers if they get confused about how to solve a problem.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I am a retired developmental optometrist, a profession where I used math every day. I have been a math tutor and academic coach for eight years. I am certified by the National Tutoring Association.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

The National Tutoring Association has certified me as a tutor and academic coach. I enjoy teaching pre-algebra with a multi-sensory approach. For example, fractions are taught not only by writing examples and explanations but also by having my student hold a sheet of paper and cutting it into different parts. We may also use coins to demonstrate their relationship to fractions... how a quarter is really a quarter of a dollar and four of them equal one dollar.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

When I tutor for the SAT, I ask my students to first take a practice test so that I can determine the math topics which we need to work on. Then we can concentrate on improving their expertise in those areas. I am certified in tutoring and academic coaching by the National Tutoring Association. I try to incorporate humor and fun during my tutoring sessions.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

I retired from developmental optometry in 2011 and I started tutoring shortly thereafter. When my student asks, "Why is trigonometry important?" I can answer that trigonometry is used to calculate the path of a light ray as it is refracted. Trigonometry explains why the bottom of a swimming pool appears closer than it really is. I am certified as a tutor and an academic coach by the National Tutoring Association. I can patiently explain trigonometric concepts to my students, using humor to lighten up the tutoring session.
