Bio

I have held both Nevada and Utah teaching licenses.

I attended Southern Utah State College--now Southern Utah University--in Cedar City, where I earned a B.A. degree in Political Science, with a minor in Speech. Later I attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for three semesters to complete the education classes and student teaching I needed to earn a Nevada Educational License. I also qualified and certified to teach English, and a few years later added a Journalism endorsement.

I taught for eleven years at the Adult Education High School, Horizon High School, and at Rancho High School for the Clark County School District, Las Vegas, NV. During that time I taught English, Speech, U.S. Government. and U.S. History. I also tutored for one year at a Sylvan Learning Center. This past Spring semester I did substitute teaching for the Salt Lake City School District.

My Tutoring Philosophy and Methods

I will first determine the main learning style of my student so I can tailor the learning activities to best meet their needs. The student will take an informal pretest of the subject to see what he or she already knows and what areas we need to work on. We will have regular assessments of the material covered to insure mastery of the subject. I will seek the student's input on what he or she wants to learn in that session, as well as having a sequential learning activity prepared to continue the mastery of the subject we are working on. Sometimes I will guide the student to do most of the explaining by asking probing questions. This will reinforce learning for the student and help identify problems areas. I believe learning doesn't always require a "serious" attitude- that there is room for some humor along the way. I also believe in the importance of using positive feedback and reinforcement.

If you want your personal English teacher on writing and grammar, William F. is the perfect one for you. I needed help passing a writing exam. Mr. F. gave me a lot: he read my writings online and on paper, edited everything before our sessions, identified my mistake patterns, provided books for me to study, came up with relevant writing prompts so that I could practice more. He was so efficient that I passed the writing test after working with him only a few sessions. Highly recommend Mr. F.
