My Background:
I earned an M.S. in physics while teaching two years of introductory physics at UC Davis as a Ph.D. candidate. I worked with the Physics Education Research Group at UC Davis, and have written a complete high school physics curriculum based on the Common Core Standards. I have four years of lab research experience and have been teaching and tutoring college level math and science for ten years. I was the Math and Physics Department Head at Fusion Academy in Woodland Hills, CA before building a tutoring business in NYC. I currently live near Sewanee and work as a physicist and data analyst.

Teaching Philosophy:
Research shows that every student learns best when they are guided toward making their own mental models of subject matter. My goal as a teacher/tutor is to help a student find his or her own way toward becoming a self-starter and self-motivated learner. I do this by developing problem solving skills, executive functioning skills, building academic and personal confidence, and presenting material in innovative ways.

I also have experience in working with young people who have "Learning Differences" such as dyslexia and dyscalculia. I've often found that these students have very unique and often brilliant perspectives on the subjects they are learning. I work with middle and high school students, as well as college level students.

I am available to teach accredited homeschool courses. Email me for more information and references.

Differential Equations

I have a M.S. in physics from UC Davis. Such a degree requires extensive background in mathematics, including differential equations, linear algebra and advanced, mult-variate calculus. I completed my first course of Diff.Eq. as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, and have since completed courses such as Advanced Calculus, and graduate level math courses. I have extensive knowledge of the function, form and application of Diff. Eq's.

Physics tutor

Emily was terrific with my girls-- and frankly, give the male driven nature of most STEM programs, I think they found her a refreshing as well as a knowledgeable tutor. She was patient and provided clear direction/ information; most importantly, my girls felt comfortable stopping and questioning her regarding topics they felt more help was required. Thanks so much.

Very In-Depth and Informative

I was able to work the entire time with Emily to connect equations with their applications for a unit of physics I really struggled with. Emily was very kind and helped push me in the right direction without giving me the answers, letting me work my way to the correct solutions to my questions.

Excellent tutor/subject matter

While working with my son in Algebra 2, she helps reinforce topics learned in algebra 1. She is a patient and knowledgeable tutor. We were so pleased with her teaching abilities when she worked with my daughter that it was no brained to contact her when my son needed help. Thank you Emily!

Great first experience

Emily was very knowledgable and interactive with my daughter. My daughter liked the lesson which was huge! It took some convincing to have my daughter by into online tutoring since she already spends the day on the computer. We.look forward to future sessions with Emily.

Amazing Physics tutor

My daughter has been struggling in AP Physics since the start of the school year. With just one lesson with Emily, she feels more confident and excited about learning physics this school year.

Excellent friendly knowledgeable

Emily has worked with my 18-year old for some time and the experience has been great. A very solid and sympathetic tutor; on time, helpful, patient, knowledgeable. Highly recommended.

Great Tutor

Emily really helped my daughter get her feet under her at the start of Regents Physics. She was able to quickly allay the anxiety caused by a teacher who had veered off (and way above) the standard curriculum with her mastery of both physics and calculus. She's confident and reassuring, my daughter responded very positively to her and she was clearly excellent at explaining and clarifying the subject matter.

Knowledgeable and patient

Emily helped my daughter with basic chemistry and reviewed some algebra with her in preparation for the school year. All went well.

Very Helpful Tutor!

Emily provided me with really good explanations of Trig and Algebra 2 topics. I highly recommend for anyone looking to get a good grade on the Trig/Algebra 2 Regents.
