I have a passion for teaching, and am told by my non-scientist friends and family that I have a talent for making complex ideas understandable. Often, when students feel lost, it's because they don't have a big-picture understanding of the subject; I specialize in providing such an understanding. I also have years of experience figuring out just what is confusing a student and tailoring an explanation to address that confusion. I'm available afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

I'm also a skilled expository writer, and have a deep understanding of vocabulary—particularly the subtle distinctions that exist between similar words. To quote Mark Twain, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter—’tis the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning."

Please contact me so I can provide whatever help you need.

Macintosh

I've been using a Mac continuously since 2003, and know the OS very well. In particular, I've spent a lot of time setting up my Mac for optimum productivity when working with multiple programs. I'm also comfortable working within the Terminal, having used the Mac as a development platform for my research in computational biophysics.
Mathematica,

Mathematica

I started using Mathematica with version 5, in 2003, which was my first year taking graduate classes in the UCLA Dept. of Chemistry. When I subsequently was a teaching assistant for the department's graduate statistical mechanics class, I taught those students to use Mathematica. I've also used Mathematica extensively in my research.

I have a B.A. in chemistry and biology from Dartmouth (summa cum laude), and a Ph.D. in chemistry from UCLA. I have four years of teaching experience in the Massachusetts public school system, where I taught elementary science at both the junior high school and high school levels. I also have 11 years of experience as a senior science policy expert at USDA, where I specialized in science communication (explaining science to non-scientists). My specialty is figuring out ways to simplify complex ideas. I am currently an Adjunct Prof. of Chemistry at West Los Angeles College.

Big picture and framework tutor

I had a quick and test taking mindset for my 10th grader who is taking AP chemistry in the coming May. I just wanted my child to excel in the test due to competing priorities. Aron is the opposite of this mindset, he takes time to explain and setting up a good framework for learning. My child loves his style and wants to continue with Aron because he feels in the long run Aron’s style will provide him a more solid foundation for his future success.

Super helpful in helping me with Mathematica and data cleansing

I am trying to learn Mathematica better and am using to do data analytics. Aron was very good at working with me on cleaning data and trying different things using Mathematica and Excel. Again he worked "with me" vs doing it for me.

Extremely knowledgeable, effective, dedicated, results-oriented and personable

Aron is a superb tutor. My daughter was struggling in her 10th grade chem class, particularly in the areas of the Mole Concept, Stoichiometry, and the Electromagnetic Spectrum. I had previously hired two different chem tutors from two different tutoring sites; however, their methods of tutoring were non-personalized and non-flexible and my daughter felt frustrated and discouraged after the sessions. I found Aron through Wyzant and he is amazing. We communicated several times over a period of a few days as he specifically wanted to know what challenges my daughter was facing in chem and what she wanted to accomplish during the session. He asked me to send him her study guide, handouts and online textbook beforehand so he review them and be well-prepared the moment he walked in the door. Aron was very intuitive and adjusted his tutoring style to fit my daughter's learning style and pace. He made sure she understood each concept before moving to the next by having her articulate her understanding and explain her reasoning when she worked on problems. My daughter experienced significant learning gains in a short period of time and came away from the session feeling confident, encouraged and motivated.
