Hello, my name is Meghan, or Mae for short! I graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a Contract Major in Italian Language and Literature; English Writing and Lit.; and Fine Art. I've studied Italian since middle school, and spent one academic year abroad studying at the Università di Urbino, Carlo Bo.
I've tutored in various ways and subjects over several years, offering regular weekly meeting tutoring sessions for primary school students looking for a foundation in foreign language before middle school instruction; formal sessions or clarifying discussions with middle or high school students just starting Italian or Spanish; work with the SUNY New Paltz Tutoring Center for Essay Writing and English Literature, as well as Italian Language, or tutoring sessions with friends in college who were struggling in their foreign language classes.
I was also tutorED in math and science for much of middle school and high school, and I know how it feels to struggle with a subject, and to be on the opposite end of the tutoring table. It's important for me to learn a bit about a student's learning styles or fears or concerns, and from there, I reinforce the lessons surrounding the subject matter and offer practice and exercises both created over the years and taken from workbooks. I believe in the individuality of case-by-case, one-on-one tutoring and that different students have different needs.
In my professional life I've used Italian in museum and fine art work, gave tours and presentations in Italian, translated press documents into Italian, and later used the language as a food and wine educator. I've maintained Spanish language skills working bilingually in work at a nursing home, museum visitor services, and in restaurants and cafés. I am a published poet and have worked in communications, with press agencies, and as media content writer.
Above all, I'm passionate about these subjects in academics and in life, and look forward to sharing that with prospective students!
